Generally you should not need to do this. In normal work, the only reason they are set is if you Remove Rests, in which case they get set correctly automatically. Of course you can set a shortcut to Remove Rests.
Most of the debate and confusion about them on the forum occurs with xml imports when the import can lead to an unexpected absence of rests.
hmmmm
I’m working on a piece that has lots of voices, and I don’t want to have the rests for all voices always showing up.
I guess I can delete rests. I figured start/end voice would be cleaner and more “logical”. I’ve had issues in the past using hidden/deleted rests, where I forget that a voice ends.
well, I do have a shortcut for it.
but I also want some phrases to start halfway through a bar, that type of thing, and remove rests CAN become tedious.
Oh well. I was hoping I could make shortcuts to start and end voices.
Sometimes removing rests can require removing MANY rests, while “start voice” would be quicker if I had a shortcut to it. it would be one action, to one note, that would automatically take care of rests I want to remove.
But since it’s not possible at this time, I guess I’ll just remove rests.
so just to be sure, commands in the lower zone (I forget how it’s called… that panel that comes up from the bottom of the screen) can’t be accessed other than through that very menu? There are no keyboard shortcuts for those?
You can record a macro to change settings in the Properties panel, and then you can invoke the macro from the Script menu or from the jump bar (after a restart). Or you can add a key command for the macro, if you don’t mind editing the JSON file that contains key commands.
True to a point, but a real-world example crops up in hymns I do. My final product has to be a musicxml export (that ends up being manipulated in verovio). If I have a quarter note, quarter note rest, barline, quarter note rest, quarter note in voice 2, no matter what settings I change in the myriad of settings menus it always exports both voice 1 & voice 2 rests. I only need one rest. I find if I specify the end voice on the first quarter note and start voice on the last quarter note it exports correctly. Having a shortcut key would be very welcome in those few times I have several measures to do.
