Keyboard shortcut to transpose midi clips in arrange window

When I was using Cubase 8 I set up a keyboard shortcut using the [ and ] keys to transpose midi up or down an octave - it worked on any selected midi note or midi clip both in the edit window and the arrange window. It meant that when, for instance, I had an instance of Kontakt open I could audition different instruments and if I came across one that was a significantly different pitch I could just click on the midi part in the arrange window, hit [ or ] and pitch it down or up.

I have tried to set the same thing up in Cubase 12 using the add up and add down functions assigned to the relevant keys. But it isn’t behaving at all the same. Firstly, it only works in the edit window. If I use the [ or ] keys in the arrange window, even if a midi clip is selected, Cubase just adds more and more tracks to the selection (either up or down) but doesn’t transpose the midi at all. As I mentioned, it will transpose the midi using these keys in the edit window.

Another thing that Cubase 8 used to do in this respect was that in the edit window the transpose keyboard shortcut worked without any of the midi notes having to be selected. Selection was only necessary if I wanted to shift notes one semitone at a time.

So. Thanks for reading this far. How do I set up a keyboard shortcut that will transpose midi clips up or down an octave while in the arrange window?

Is it that the [ and ] keys are already assigned to selecting tracks in the arrange window? If so, where will I find them to disable them?

Thanks

Hi,

I would make the Logical Presets:

  • Transpose Octave Up
  • Transpose Octave Down

Then assign these Presets to the given Key Commands. This would work in both the Key Editor (or any other Editor) and the selected MIDI Part in the Project window.

Thanks Martin, sounds like it would do the trick… any hints as to how I’d even start to do this? It’s a very long time since I did anything like this as my version of Cubase 8 was set up by me in 2014 and I’ve only just updated to 12.

Make sure the MIDI clip is selected in the Project View.

Thank you, I shall give that a go.

For transposing down by an octave you would exchange the “Add” with “Subtract”.
You probably figured that one out yourself already. :grinning:

Well unsurprisingly my Logical Editor doesn’t have the options “Note” or “Value 1”…

You have to use the Logical Editor under the MIDI-Menu not the project logical editor.

Thank you for that - I found it and yes I’ve now done it, thanks all for your input, much appreciated.

I now have a simple keyboard shortcut to go up and down one octave with a selected midi clip in the project window.

It’s even doing exactly what I wanted it to do, which is to transpose notes +/- one octave within the midi editor without having to select anything, I’m super happy with the result.

Thanks all, good job all round.
