Keys get “stuck” recording on score (ipad M2 Pro) using virtual keyboard

Set up a five part orchestral score. Decided to try recording a violin part live using the virtual keyboard on a five part orchestral score. The keys just get stuck when you record but inconsistently, so sometimes some keys stay stuck down and other times they don’t So for example moving from a C to an E flat to an F, the C stays stuck down while you record the E flat which then stays stuck down and when you play the F or both of the other keys stay stuck down. Tried multiple times.

As a former PC Sibelius user I cannot believe how disappointed I am that literally the FIRST thing I try on Dorico doesn’t work. Was thinking about. recommending Dorico to my school but if the most very basic thing of recording on a track doesn’t work, how can I? I am using an iPad Pro M2 with 512GB. Pretty powerful kit which is not to blame.

Hello David,
welcome to the forum!
Have you tried Sibelius on your iPad too?
They also brought out a iOS version of their software. I was a long time Sibelius user - something like almost 30 years - and I still pay a subscription. Still I have completely changed to the Dorico infrastructure since it came out.
I didn’t like Sibelius’s iPad version, but you might be happy trying it.
Dorico for iPad on the other side has an astounding resemblance to it’s desktop pendant. I use it only, if I want to have fun - or if I want to prepare and setup a project which I will then seriously open on my desktop. I’ve had some issues with file saving, but I might be one of a few only.

Welcome to the forum, @MusoDave. We know that when playing multiple notes on the on-screen keyboard, keys can become stuck down. I won’t bore you with the technical details, since you’re completely right that it’s not good enough as it stands. We need to change the approach to how the tracking of fingers works in this component in order to improve it, and the task is on our backlog for future fixing.

Thank very much for the reply Daniel. It did seem to do it even playing separate notes sequentially. However I appreciate the fact it’s on your ToDo list.

Are you saying that if I connect a MIDI keyboard to my iPad by USB it should work ok?

I am also looking at buying the MacBook version which I suspect will work differently.

Can I suggest one tiny idea which as a new user I thought would exist: the ability to add notes with the Apple Pencil. Just a thought. I liked the idea of just being able to write the note down clicking straight onto the stave.

It doesn’t work very well on Windows desktop, when used with a mouse, either – keys get stuck. I think I posted a thread about it once. Good to hear fixing it is on the radar. (I do have a keyboard attached to the computer sitting in front of the screen, and yet sometimes it’s just more convenient to use Dorico’s virtual keyboard.)

Hi Dave, I once bought a small midi keyboard to work with my MacBook Pro.
I was very pleased to later notice, that it also works with my iPad and Dorico.

Yes, this is also something we’d like to add. Not that you should be able to “write” the notes in, but that you should be able to tap them in with the Pencil.
