Labeling a voice as "Lead" - see attachment for full explanation

This is one of those “we did it this way in Finale, but how do you do it in Dorico” questions.
In the attachments you can see the manuscript score that I am transcribing and the score section in Dorico. The composer wants the 3rd Trumpet designated as “Lead”. I can probably get away with not using the little bracket just before, but how do I just make the indication of “Lead” in that spot?
I looked in the Write dropdown under Create Text and Create System Text, but when I entered it, it showed up at the top of the score.
I really didn’t expect to be back so soon…

By the way, in Finale it’s called “Expressive Text” or “Technique Text”

How come you used system text?

Click where you want the label and press Shift+X. This will open the Text popover. If you press Shift+Alt/Opt+X then it will be system text.

When you enter System text, the text appears on top of the score (and on top of the first staff in Parts) by default. You need Staff-attached text for your example.

Here more information from the Manual:

@DanielMuzMurray to answer your question “How come you used system text?”, I can only say “because I’m still learning”. Thanks for the quick response! I assume I can change the distance of the text from the staff in Engrave mode? It crashes into the staff above right now.
@Christian_R I appreciate your answer as well. Thanks for the link to the manual.
I’m done for the day. Thanks to both of you for helping me end on a solved problem!

Are you in Galley view or Page view? It shouldn’t be crashing. Send a screenshot if you like. (But, yes, you can adjust it Globally or Locally in Engrave mode)

I was thinking it might be for an education thing where anything could be required …

This was in Galley view. I see in Page view that Dorico moved the systems farther apart. But it would still be nice to know how to move it closer to the staff

You can select the text, open Properties, and select Avoid Collisions. Or, you can manually move it in Engrave mode.

Fabulous! I’m away from my computer right now, but will do that when next I’m in the program.
Peace…

Hi @thgmusic, it is also possible to increase the spacing of staves for Galley view in Layout Options → Vertical Spacing → In galley view, expand ideal staff gaps to: xxx%. Default is 125%. Try something like 180% .
(This doesn’t influence the vertical spacing of Page view but just sets a fixed distance between all staves in Galley view):

The global option to set the Default distance from staff, for text items, is in Engraving Options → Text. Default is 3, which is very generous.
(This influences the distance between text items and staff in both Page view and Galley view):
