my normal workflow in creating an album is to create markers either in wave lab or other DAW, then use autosplit preset to create a montage with named clips from the markers. the clips are all unlocked. i then use CD wizard to create the CD track markers, and regardless of checking the ‘keep locked CD track markers. i then have to manually uncheck each lock. how can i avoid this, and have the locks not appear, by default. surely this has been asked before, but i couldn’t find anything in the search or manual
also with autosplit, is there a way to create a montage that will stagger the clips between two tracks?
Interesting question. I’ve never found a way to make the makers by locked by default but maybe PG knows why.
I guess my workflow is a little different:
Import clips into a new montage, using the stagger option
Determine the spacing between all clips one at a time as needed
Run the CD Wizard to generate the markers for each clip using the setting attached here.
Now I have markers for each clip/song and they’re properly named because my clips are already properly named before loading into WaveLab. I’ve never had markers be locked by default so I’d be curious to know where that setting is or why it happens. I also never use Auto Split so maybe that’s it.
Maybe there is a way to simplify your montage set up so Auto Split isn’t needed.
Yeah, I guess for now I just need to adjust my workflow to mirror yours, that should solve the stagger option.
But dear Lord, why the copy-protection by default. I’m not aware of any CDs that can’t be easily ripped and/or easily defeated with a bit of (lossless) conversion. Why can’t there be a preference to set the default nature of the locks on all CD tracks, regardless of how they come into existence (i.e., each of our workflows)? At a minimum, seems like there should be a checkbox to switch all locks on/off with a single click. How many people want to copy-protect only SOME of the tracks on a CD? It’s surely all on or all off for the majority, so a way to turn all on/off with a single click in CD pane seems logical. PG, feature request?
Justin, thanks, as always. Appreciate the super-quick response and helpful reply, hat tip to you.
Oh, I see what you mean. You are saying the CD-Tracks are locked. I thought you meant the clips and/or markers were locked. I guess I never pay attention to this and keep the CD tracks locked as they default to. It’s never been an issue that I’m aware of after about 7 years of using WaveLab.
Maybe I’ll revisit the manual on that but it seems that at minimum, a way to select or de-select all tracks at once would be nice.
The “Copy Protected” flag is ON by default, because this is the standard. The Redbook standard assumes by default that CDs contain Copyright protected material that can’t be copied.
If you change this setting, a flag called “Copy Permitted” will be burnt on the CD.
I have read a long time in the past, that some CD players are not compatible with this “Copy Permitted” status.
This is why the default is “copy protection checked” in WaveLab. And unless you have a very good reason to change it, you should not.
If you render a DDP instead of burning a CD, does the copy protection flag (or lack of) have any meaning?
It occurred to me that I never burn a CD direct from a montage anymore. I always make a DDP first for client approval reasons, but also to inspect the audio before burning a CD because especially with older versions of WaveLab, I wouldn’t always trust the 3rd party plugin processing so I would always inspect the rendered DDP image and then burn the DDP to CD from the special WaveLab tool (write CD from DDP image) or from a 3rd party DDP Player but never from an open montage.
This could explain why I never cared about this copy protection option either way.
If you render a DDP instead of burning a CD, does the copy protection flag (or lack of) have any meaning?
Yes. The flags, whatever their state, is set inside the DDP. If the DDP is used to burn a CD or create a glass master, then the flags are carried over from the DDP.
On a similar note, sometime I have a need for a “re-stagger” option because sometimes the original song order will change and songs that were once staggered can end up on the same track right next to each other. Would be nice to have a “Re-Stagger” button to solve that issue.
Or checkbox in both areas (Auto-split and Montage)? Having it only in Montage is slightly less ideal as it creates another step/clicks for said workflow, but would still be better than current workflow of selecting every other one and dragging by far! Thanks for considering.
A ‘re-stagger’ option as Justin mentions would rock as well!
