Lyrics in Choral Works

Is it possible to copy the lyrics in a soprano line to the Alto line without carrying the assigned pitches to the alto line. In other words how can I copy just the lyrics from i.e. the soprano line into the alto line?

Select everything in the Soprano, then filter lyrics and then Alt-click in the Alto.

Or ā€¦ select the whole line, filter lyrics, paste special > duplicate to staff below.

Okay, understand a little, but how do I filter? I am a Finale transferā€¦

After you selected you right-click with the mouse and in the menu which opens you find ā€œfilterā€.

(I use Dorico in German)

Okay, this idiot (me) found the filter in the Edit Menu and am now very happy. Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum, William!

Another selecting method instead of filtering is Edit > Select More: Select one lyric syllable and āŒ˜ā‡§A multiple times to include more of the same type of item. The selection increases to the whole bar, the whole system, and the whole flow (in that staff).

ā€¦ Or select the first syllable you want, then Command click the last syllable you want, and press Select More to get everything in-between!

ā€¦Or, if youā€™re going to be doing this a lot, look into setting up jump bar aliases for your most common filters.

I havenā€™t done it for lyrics, but I have set up fn for filter notes and fd for filter dynamics, so all that necessary is to select the whole passage and type jfd or jfn.

Itā€™s a huge timesaver.

Though for lyrics (where youā€™re copying just one line) Benā€™s approach is probably as fast.

Thanks all, I am just finding the power of Dorico. Iā€™ve been a Finale user since 1989. So, this was quite an adjustment. Just finished my first commisioned work and it was so much easier in Dorico. Just now seeing the power of Dorico!

It is also in the right-click context menu.

Ok, Iā€™ll give that a look.

@wfrayer , using the context menu (using right click after selecting something) as @janus suggested, is much faster than using the menu Edit because Dorico shows then only the things that you can actually do with the current selection
