Lyrics in church chant

Hello Dorico community

First time post from a recent Finale refugee - so I hope the following is comprehensible!

Most weeks I have to create chant notation similar to the screenshot attached…

  1. How can I format the multiple lyrics to fit underneath the first note but on 2 or more lines?
I have come across the down arrow while entering via the popover, which works - but it doesn’t help when there is a second syllable on the next note ( “- cept” in my example), as Dorico seems to default to only creating hyphens with Line 1 (not the lower Lines 2 or 3)

  2. How can I move the chords following the multiple lyric chord to later in the bar, leaving room for the multiple lyrics under one note? It’s all rather
    cramped in the early part.

Any help gratefully appreciated!

Chris

  1. Use the translation line if it’s just one extra line
  2. With the long “syllable” selected, set your lyric alignment to “Left” in the bottom panel. The other notes will sort themselves out.

Thanks Dan.

Actually your answer to 2 kind of obviates the need for an answer to 1 to a large degree.

Very useful tip, thank you. I am finding the way Dorico automatically sorts itself out to be very advanced compared to what I used to have to do manually in Finale…

As for 1, using the translation line means that the second line of lyrics (when I need them) would actually be in italics, which I would not want.

I am also still not certain that the hyphenated (split) word would appear correctly either though - is it not possible to force the hyphenation to come from the second (or third) lyric line onto the next note (which is still on the first line)?

Gratefully in advance…

Chris

No, you’d need to split it manually, and use a non-breaking hyphen at the end of the first line.

Thanks again, Dan - I will give that a try.
