Lyrics not Spacing

Hello all

I’m struggling here with lyric placement, as I seem to have done something to my score so that the lyrics are not automatically re-spacing the notes when I plug them in. I’ve used lyrics before on other scores, and not had this problem, so I must have changed some setting somewhere. I did a pile of digging around to find an answer and no dice, so I’m back in hopes of yet more forum wisdom.

The slight complexity here is that the part in my score (I.) is intended to be for either an instrumentalist or a vocalist, and I’ve got two lines on the one staff for a harmony line. Btu that shouldn’t cause this problem. I did discover that maybe it would be good to change the score style to “vocal staff” in Setup, so I’ve done that. I kept coming across the term “avoid collisions” in the manual, but couldn’t find that term in reference to lyrics (it shows up for ties and slurs in Engrave Options).

I’ve attached my working score, and any advice would be appreciated. I’ve only plugged words into bars 5 and 6 and called it quits. As usual for me, I’m sure this is a simple setting change and/or driver error, as this has all worked just fine for me in previous pieces.

Thanks, friends.

The combination of your space size and casting off is making systems overfull.

If you want 4 bars per system and lyrics, you can experiment with making your lyric size smaller and your space size smaller. Once you get the system under 100% fullness, it spaces correctly.

Here’s with a reduced space size.

Another option, attached.

I reduced the lyric size slightly, the space for hyphens, and the space between lyrics. Then I removed staff labels (you don’t need them on all staves) and reduced the note spacing.

Thank you, friends. As I suspected, it was something simple - I had the casting off fixed, so the lyric tool was obeying that. Still getting my mind around things here, and the benefits of trusting the default settings first in Dorico, then tweaking from there rather than in advance.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The only problem is that now I have to write more lyrics…

Thank you, Dan. That’s great. Quick follow-up: where is the command to remove Staff Labels on each system? I agree they don’t need to be there, which will free up space. But I didn’t see that setting in the Engraving Options (which of course doesn’t mean it’s not there).

Thanks a million, as always.

It’s in Layout Options > Staves and Systems > Staff Labels.

As @charles_piano said.

To explain further: because showing or hiding staff labels might be different in different layouts, it is in the layout-specific settings. Engraving Options are project-wide.

Great, thanks friends. Trying to get myself in the mindset around the distinction between the layouts and the overall engraving. This helps. Thanks!
