Lyrics running into other lyrics

Lyrics are running into each other

Music too tight.

Now for the not (jokingly) curt answer:
Your music is clearly too tight, or your lyric size is too large for the relative layout. You can:

a.) make your lyric font smaller or
b.) (typically preferable) increase your note spacing and/or change your casting off to be less agressive.

IF, on the other hand, you are speaking of the vertical plane, then you need to decrease your rastral size to better suit your physical page size or you can adjust the amount of spacing required for lyrics in engraving settings.

Thanks Romanos. I am totally new to Dorico----migrating from Finale. I really do. not know what you mean how to change lyric fonts as well as increase your note spacing and/or change your casting off to be less agressive. and “Rastral Size”.

James,
Thanks for getting back to me. Also the left and right sides of the music to the bars can be smaller…I just do not know how to accommodate that.

Layout Options - page setup - page margins

Joe, have you tried working through the First Steps guide? It will help you get used to Dorico terminology and some of the usual ways of working in the application.

The font used for lyrics is specified in Library > Paragraph Styles > Lyrics. Making it smaller might reduce collisions.

Note spacing (what Finale called music spacing) is in Library > Layout Options > Note Spacing. You can adjust it to give more room to each note.

Rastral size refers to the size of each staff. This is in Library > Layout Options > Page Setup > Space Size. A space is the distance between two staff lines, or 1/4 the height of a staff. A smaller space size will make all the notes and lyrics smaller and will give you more room on the page to work with. (The standard space sizes are called Rastral sizes.)

“Casting off” refers to the process of fitting bars into systems. In Finale, it was very common to push bars around on the page to get things to look good. In Dorico, the best approach is to work from the general to the local: change project settings like note spacing and system gaps so that you get the best results you can from Dorico’s algorithms, and then adjust here and there only as needed.

OMG You walk on water…I cannot tell you how helpful you have been. I am an old dude who has been using Finale since 2015 and as you probably know, old dudes sometimes have a challenge with change. There are so many features in Dorico that seem wonderful, but it is the initial impact that is some daunting.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

Aaron, without being a pain in the A&&, can I in the future use your guidance for Dorico help?
Joe

Joe, I’m glad you found that information helpful! (And note that even when you reply by email, your response gets added to the thread on the forum.)

Whenever you run into problems with Dorico, your best bet is to post something here on the forum. There are many very knowledgeable and helpful people here, and someone will be able to help you.

Aaron,
As you can see from the pdf, I was able to get 3 bars on the 17-19, but the lyrics are running together and I decreased the size quite a bit. Also on the right side of the page, there is a lot of room and I would imagine if I could shrink that space, the bars would have more space.

Also what I was able to do in Finale is increase the # of staves per page dragging the staves closer together.

When I inserted a bar before another bar, I lost the music (the bar itself)…

I meant the left side of the page…UGH

Can you post a cut-down version of your Dorico project file, so that we can see what settings you have?

Just a thought.

Have set the option to make room for lyrics?
(Layout Options>Note Spacing…)

@Joe_Giarrusso Those are the project stats, not the settings.

Can you please upload a copy of your project? If you like, you can cut it down to something that just shows a page or two, so we can look at the settings you have and make suggestions about how to get better spacing.

Did that work?

Unfortunately not, @Joe_Giarrusso

Try to upload the Dorico file itself. You can drag it directly into the editor of the post, or use the icon in the editor to locate your file:

I don’t think it works if you reply by email. Please visit the forum and follow @Christian_R 's advice to upload the Dorico file.
