Lyrics tool skipping notes

Hey all,

I’m currently putting together some battery parts for the first time in Dorico. I figure that using the lyrics tool is the best way to accomplish sticking, and it works well, but it keeps skipping notes. as in the image shown. On the left is what I’m trying to make, and on the right is what Dorico does when i input. Is there a way to make the lyrics tool hit every note?

If you’re referring to the ties (unsure…), then yes, the lyric popover skips the remainder of the tie chain, since it sees it as one note.

If you want to add lyrics on a tied note, untie it first, add the lyrics, then re-tie.

Hey Dan,

I should have clarified what I am talking about. In bar 10, when I applied the first r, it skipped all those notes and the carat went to where the second r is in bar 11. I would like the carat to move to the next sixteenth note, for some reason it’s not doing that.

Are they in different voices?

I was thinking the same, but the beaming would contradict that theory. @mrbuddyro, a project file would be most helpful here to reduce the guessing. You could even cut it down to just the three bars in the picture.

You’re running into trouble because the Tenors are a percussion kit. See here for a thorough explanation. Essentially, a kit looks and behaves like a single instrument in Setup mode but it’s really an amalgamation of multiple unpitched instruments. The lyrics popover will always skip to the next note in that instrument because that’s what would happen if each of the (in this case) four tenor drums were written on its own staff. You could get around it by faking the entire part in a pitched staff instead, but manual re-selecting as I guess you’ve been doing is a viable option too.

Or alt/opt-clicking them into place. I would do all the r’s first, then the l’s.

Thanks both. I hope that they add an option to treat the entire stave as one instrument for lyrics (or a sticking tool..) but using alt is a brilliant workaround, guess that’s what I’ll “stick” to for now.

That sounds really easy, may be I’ll take up percussion today
