The Steinberg Download Assistant does make life easier for sure. But I have a comment:
I have specified a download folder for all Steinberg products on an internal SSD. So I can download VST libraries and ‘register those in place’. So far so good.
Now, when I click the ‘Install again’ button of a previously downloaded VST, this Download assistant re-downloads the whole thing (e.g. Content HALion 7 = 30 GB). I think that in an earlier release of the Download Assistant, it checked the presence of the files and didn’t re-download unnecessarily …
After a clean Windows install, this is pretty annoying …
Now, if I do something wrong, please let me know
I had this issue among others with the SDA.
Weird really, considering I thought two folders with the same name couldn’t reside in the same location, as it did when I changed the download path via the options in the SDA.
I think the best way to set up the Download Folder, is to use the default one, but move the default Download Folder on the C drive, to your desired location via its properties.
I can ‘move’ the Download folder, but the default folder is …Users/ …/Downloads/Steinberg.
It is not possible to move that ‘Steinberg’ folder as such through altering the location in the properties …
Not sure how versed you are on this procedure, but just in case, in short, it is as follows.
Note: Reset the SDA to default download values, before proceeding, and do a quick check to make sure it is downloading to the Windows defaulted download folder. You can interrupt the download and check the DL Folder to see if it has created the 64BIT Folder.
Not at my PC right now, so this is from memory and may be a bit vague, but I’ll try my best. I have explained this procedure to another forum user in more detail, in a different thread.
Create a folder on your internal SSD, naming it “Downloads”.
Go to your default download folder on the C drive Users/ …/Downloads/Steinberg.and right click to open properties.
Click on the “Location” tab and then click “Move”
Navigate to your preferred internal SSD and OPEN the “Download” folder you previously created.
Click “Move”. and then “Apply”. You will be asked if you wish to move the content within the original download folder, select yes.
This becomes your default Download Location and the SDA should no longer Re-Download files already downloaded. Also, anything you download from the Internet, will also find this folder, unless you manually specify a different location.
SDA, when you run it, will also recognise this folder as your default.
Since you’ve already downloaded content, what you could try after you’ve set it up, is, download the smallest content via the SDA and then check the download folder to check its placement. Then move all the previously downloaded content to this location and try a Re-Install from there. The SDA takes a little while to read through the files.
That’s a bit what is holding me back.
But thanks for the explanation. Didn’t think that way. (Re-locating that ‘Downloads/Steinberg’ folder as a whole.)
I was pulling out what little hair I’ve got left, trying to get Halion sonic, Groove agent and Library assistant to find and recognize the media content files that I transfered to my new SSD. As a last attempt before a complete re-install, I just double clicked on one of the Halion sonic presets in the new file location. To my supprise I got a pop up window asking me to allow Steinberg library assistant to make changes to the file. I clicked yes and it then asked me to register the file. I clicked “register in current Location” and Job done!!!
