If I enter text using ‘control V’ etc from a text buffer I get extender lines. But what happens if I want to just add an extender line directly (because I’ve added more notes). Here I would like the last syllable have an extender line right through to the C.
How do make that happen?
You can select “ware” and Shift+Alt+Right arrow in Write Mode.
(Maybe available only from Dorico 6, I’m not sure).

Either: select the syllable, press Enter (to invoke the popover), and press Space twice;
Or: select the syllable and “lengthen its duration”, as for any other object (as charles describes.)
(Looks like you need an extension line on the tied C, too.!)

Have you checked the Engraving Options?

thanks for the quick answers
So true- I keep forgetting how consistent Dorico actually is.
