Mapping parameter to Modwheel without "Learn MIDI CC"

I own the truly exciting VSTi “NOISES” by AudioThing. While all of the instrument’s functions are assigned to a parameter, they can be automated. However, the mod wheel isn’t assigned, and I’d like to assign it to the “127 Selector” parameter. Unfortunately, the plugin doesn’t support “Learn MIDI CC.” Surely there’s some way to “redirect” the factory-assigned parameter to the mod wheel (CC1)? Thanks for the help from the pros.

Hi,

You can use the Focus Quick Controls. In the header of the plug-in window, on the right side, enable the QC. Then you can make the assignment.

hi Martin, oh, I don`t understand what You mean!? :frowning:

Hi,

I mean this button:

Then you will see the QC section bellow (above the plug-in UI).

hi Martin,

I’ve already explored this area, but it seems to only offer the option mapping the Quick Controls? I don’t see any way to assign the modwheel there.

Hi,

The Focus Quick Controls MIDI messages are assignable in the MIDI Remote (script).

Alternatively, you can use the Track Quick Controls. The MIDI Assignment is done in the Studio > Studio Setup Track Quick Controls.

… oh, I’m afraid we’re talking past each other, or my knowledge level doesn’t match the necessary prerequisites. I simply want to map parameter 127 of the VSTi “NOISES” (and only this one) to the mod wheel. Due to time constraints, I haven’t bothered with the MIDI Remote Manager yet, and it seems quite complex and requires a lot of basic knowledge. It’s a shame there doesn’t seem to be a simple solution. Perhaps someone else has some advice?

Otherwise I have to take the more complicated and less convenient route via the quick controls in the INSPECTOR or the automation track or via the Poti of my KK-Keyboard.

If the plugin isn’t programmed to learn midi CC, then you’ll have to take the more complex route of assigning it through the Cubase system.

Basically the way is:

  • use MIDI Remote to assign your modulation wheel to control a parameter of the currently selected plugin
  • use Remote Control Editor to assign “127 Selector” to the parameter that is used in MIDI Remote

This, however, means that your mod wheel will permanently control a plugin parameter and will not be able to generate CC1 data to be recorded on a track as long as the MIDI Remote map is active.

Here is a video explaining the second step:

It might be a good idea to contact the vendor of the plugin and ask for the parameter to be supported via MIDI.

Thank You very much for the video. The vendor refers me to the Cubase function to assign the parameter to the modwheel

Unfortunately, the video hasn’t helped me either.

There is no such function in Cubase. At least not directly. Indirectly you can use MIDI Remote to assing your modwheel to parameter 1 of an insert plugin. Then use the plugins Focus Quick Controls and make parameter 1 the “127 Selector”.

You can also use another indirect solution if you have Cubase Pro 14.
Load the modulator “ModScripter” onto the channel where you have your plugin. Connect the ModScripter with the parameter “127 Selector”. Configure the connection to unipolar, set the knob to the minimum value (full left) and modulation depth to +100%.
Then create a midi track and route its output to the ModScripter. Activate monitoring on the midi track.
Now you can control the parameter with your modulation wheel.

The mod wheel data will enter the midi track. From there it goes to the ModScripter. There it gets converted into VST automation. From there it goes to the plugin’s parameter.

Thank you very much. The first easy-to-understand and detailed answer. But still quite complex. So I’m hoping for an update from the manufacturer AudioThing (which probably won’t come after contacting them) and will go the potentiometer route.
