Marching percussion basics will not map the snare to writing notes correctly. I have the marching percussion map set in “play”, a factory playback template which includes marching percussion map, the routing channel is set to basic marching percussion snare in HALion Sonic. Also confirming I have input set to by percussion map in preferences. All notes come out sounding like symphonic percussion when entering with mouse (limited to between middle c and a above that). Any entries on my MIDI keyboard map to middle c with no variation whatsoever, but they at least make marching snare sounds. I’m having a similar issue with the marching cymbal channel where it will only make a crash no matter which line/space on the staff is entered.
I can get the correct sounds to produce through HALion Sonic, but notation is essentially non-existent since it doesn’t match the input (or is unrelated to point and click entry). Notation and playback are mostly good with tenor and bass drums channels, though, I’m not getting any of the specialty note heads/buzzes/rolls/etc… (I’m not well versed in expressions and editing those so that is probably user error; at least the notes are sounding right and going to the right place on the staff). If anyone has a helpful tutorial on even simple notation I would also appreciate that. I’m writing extremely basic parts, so even the most basic notation entry for drumline specifically would be helpful.
This is not my field of expertise, but it is possible the percussion map is not matched to the sound set you are using. As soon as the forum software allows you to post a sample of your Dorico file (even the first couple of bars would let folks here check your percussion map/sound set/ instrument setup), please post a couple of measures from the Dorico file that is giving you trouble.
This is just a sample with all the routing the same as the above. I played around for a few minutes with point and click entry of notes as well as some with my midi keyboard. The cymbals are giving different note heads which is an improvement. Snare is still giving me only notes on c space on the staff regardless of what type of input is entered. Tenor drums and bass drums are the same as before.
I feel like I probably need to edit the percussion kit in the set up menu, since it appears the drums sounds assigned in there don’t match what marching percussion would be. But shouldn’t they come set up? And how do you change the sound of them? And even if they were set up, hitting the different pitches on my keyboard don’t give me those sounds or notes regardless on the snare line. It’s just the one note every time (this whole section is probably me getting ahead of myself since I’m still hung up just on note entry).
I’m quite surprised opening your file: have you been using a playback template? Chances are you’ve been messing with it manually before having added all the instruments. That could explain why some instruments are routed to channel 2 and 3 which are… empty in the HALion sonic instance.
I’d suggest you apply the Auto playback template, then explore the available sounds
I’m not sure if there is a disconnect between what I uploaded/you’re seeing and what I’m seeing. I’ve uploaded again without making any changes to be sure you have the most recent version. On mine, the factory playback template “Iconica Sketch, HALion Sonic Sel., Marching Perc., Olympus” is selected/applied. Additionally, snare, tenors, bass drums, and cymbals are routed to channels 1, 5, 6, and 7 respectively which matches what I see in the Halion VST. Let me know if that’s inaccurate. I can try to provide screenshots if that is a helpful alternative.
To be fair, I was trying to manually create a playback template to get aria instruments (notably vdlite) from my previous finale purchase to work unsuccessfully. I’m audibled to upgrade to Dorico 6 to see if that’s worth it for me in order to use the marching percussion sounds that I was hoping would be native to the program (and hopefully easy to use/set up). So far, not working for me, unfortunately.
