Me: Change from Write to Engrave, Dorico: NOPE!

Hi folks,

My silly title is just a reaction to a bizarre behavior I notice sometimes in Dorico 5 and Dorico 6—I’ll have some item selected in Write mode (typically a text block, a measure number, or a cue) and when I click on Engrave mode, it swaps to Engrave mode for about a second (redrawing the screen to reflect the change to that mode) and then Dorico will say NOPE and go back to Write mode (redrawing the screen again to go back to Write mode).

I’m guessing it’s a minor bug, but it’s still annoying and probably should be reported. Anyone else see this behavior in Dorico?

I haven’t seen this. Does it happen for any project, or just one? Is condensing involved? Are multiple staves involved and if so, are all the instruments present in the layout Engraving is showing?

I’ve seen this while working on both score and parts, with condensing and without. I’m working more on individual parts, so I’m seeing more often there.

Is it just the one project? I just tried it in a part and it worked fine. I assume it doesn’t matter what is selected?

It seems to happen mostly when I have a bar number, a text block, or a cue selected. It happens in every file that I’m aware of.

I’m not sure how you selected a bar number (probably a feature I’m unfamiliar with), but I tried with a cue and text and didn’t reproduce. Perhaps posting the relevant portion of the project might help diagnose. Or maybe a video showing what you’re doing.

Yes, if you can consistently trigger this behaviour, please post the precise steps. A small project will help too, in case we can’t trigger it ourselves.

It’s intermittent, so I’m not sure that a video could be captured without screen capturing being on continuously.

RE: bar numbers—I have every bar number showing in all my projects. You can select them in Write mode.

TIL. I tried that too, and didn’t see any issues.

So yesterday I was working on the first and second violin parts for a 30 minute work (~1,000 bars, 20-25 pages each).

During that time, I would estimate this happened at least 100 times. Apparently Dorico didn’t like me telling on it.

Possibly posting a Diagnostic Report, or the application.log file would help the Team to see what Dorico is doing?

Yes, next time it happens, do Help > Create Diagnostic Report right away, and attach the project here. It should give us a clue.

Didn’t take long today!

Thanks for attaching the diagnostics. How are you normally switching mode? Are you clicking the button on the toolbar, or using Ctrl+3? Are you manually triggering the “Center Selection” command immediately afterwards, e.g. via a keyboard shortcut? Are you clicking in the music area immediately after the change of mode? Is it possible Dorico’s interpreting your click as a double-click, which will switch back to Write mode? Try disabling the Double-click in Setup or Engrave mode switches to Write mode option on the Note Input and Editing page of Preferences.

Thanks for checking it out! I am only single clicking the Engrave button at the top of the workspace.

I have confirmed that the Double-click in Setup or Engrave mode switches to Write mode option is deselected.

Stupid as it may sound, try a different mouse?

Do you have a super whizzo one with ultra sensitive reporting and DPI? Or contrariwise, do you have a very old mouse? Or a trackpad issue?

Are you doing anything immediately after clicking the Engrave button in the toolbar?
