Meter Change Creates Incorrect Number of Beats in the Following Bar

I’m having an issue in Dorico where every time I change the time signature, it messes up the next bar. For example, after switching a measure to a new time signature, the following bar displays the wrong number of beats (e.g., a 4/4 bar shows only a quarter rest, as seen in the screenshot below). This also causes the bar numbers to get duplicated.

I’ve tried deleting and re-entering the time signature, but it doesn’t fix the problem. What am I doing wrong? Is there a specific setting I need to check, or a step I’m missing?

Any help would be appreciated!

Dorico 5.1.51.2153

Update: I was able to make it work by manually by changing the signpost number to 4. I am a new Dorico user and I didn’t know this was a possibility. Still, if there is a way to prevent this from happening, please let me know.

Hi @js_chaves, and welcome back.

See the Manual:

In particular this Excerpt:

or more generally:

In a couple of word, to insert a new time signature:

  • add a time signature *at the end of the passage of the new time signature (where the “old” time signature should be reinstated) as a placeholder (so the beats assigned from that rhythmic position will not change)
  • activate Insert Mode, and add your time signature in the desired place. Dorico will calculate the needed rest to be applied.

Video explanation (example: we want to add a 3/4 at bar 3, but from bar 4 we want the music to stay in 4/4 and not change):

Two important points:

  1. Changing meters in Dorico is non-destructive. So if you input a meter and everything looks wrong after that, don’t panic. Just add the correct meter where it goes and everything will be back the way it was.
  2. When you want a different meter for one bar, try:
