Midi CC Controller

I have an Akai Midimix that is wired to my computer via USB. I’ve programmed the volume sliders to use in my virtual instruments for Modulation, Expression, Volume and so on. I use it for orchestral string swells mostly.

I want to program some of the buttons on the midimix to control the transport buttons in Cubase (i.e., play, stop, rewind, record and so on). The midimix works great and shows up in the device manager, but when I try to use the new Midi remote function in Cubase to program these buttons, it doesn’t show up. When I click the add (plus) button but it wants me to assign it to ports, but all of my ports are are already in use (my interface only has 8 outs).

I there a way to make this work? or is there a device that simply has transport buttons on it?

Did you program it using MIDI Remote? If yes, then you can edit this MIDI Remote surface and add the transport buttons on it.

No I didn’t set it up in midi remote, I didn’t need to. The Midimix editor software allows you to select a midi cc parameter (i.e., modulation) and it works quite well that way. The real issue comes in when trying to program functions within Cubase to the buttons, which requires you to use midi remote. As I mentioned doing this requires you to set up ports and I have no ports left. However I wonder if they mean Midi ports as opposed to i/o ports through the interface…?

Also thank you for taking the time to respond

Yes, the MR uses MIDI ports.

If they are in use but NOT in the MIDI Remote, you can proceed and use the one you want in a new MIDI Remote. By the way I don’t see dedicated transport buttons on the MIDIMix. Do you plan to use another controller maybe?

Sometimes I’m an advanced Cubase user, but other times I’m a total idiot. Not sure what the difference is between midi ports and i/o ports, but I assume they are different so I’ll give that a try.

True… the midimix does not have transport buttons, that is why I had planned to assign the buttons on it to transport functions, and a few other tasks like metronome on/off and so on.

Not to get too far into the weeds, but my computer keyboard is physically places in front of another monitor that I use for close up midi editing. It’s become a pain to reach when I’m recording, and because I use the midimix when recording it made sense to assign that capability there. I am still looking for a midi cc controller that has smooth sliders AND transport buttons but that’s a question for another day. Again that you for taking the time to respond

Sure, you can give it a try then! Just upon setting up the MIDI Remote surface, choose just these control buttons, i.e. don’t add the faders on this surface, since you’re already happy with the way they’re currently mapped.

That makes sense… however is it possible to assign everything in midi remote so it’s all in one place? i.e., can you assign the sliders to midi cc 1 in midi remote?

No, the MR is not designed to be used as a MIDI transformation tool, at least not out of the box. using the Mapping Assistant.

Again thank you so much for your responses, you’ve been most helpful… so in this case I would just assign the buttons like you suggested…

Not meaning to dominate your whole day, but when I open MR nothing shows up, so I click the plus key. A dialogue box opens, for drop down asks for manufacturer. Second asks for model (mine doesn’t appear). However nothing works from there on out… in other words all the next drop down boxes are showing but none of them do anything when I click on them. I assume I have to do something else, just dont know what

Yes, you have to type the name you want by first clicking the “+Add model” option at the combo box of the model. The midi ports options are disabled as long as no model is found, they will be enabled when you type in a name for the model.

ahhh remind me to send you a check for your time…

No worries…
