MIDI Controller Setup to stay global whenever I open the same synth

Hello!
Would love to know if it’s possible to set up my MIDI controller (MIDI Fighter Twister) so that anytime I open say
Omnisphere
Phase Plant
etc…
is already mapped to my previously added controller setup (ADSR, Filters etc…

I’m new to Nuendo so pardon if it has already been addressed. Still getting my head around it.
Thank you!

I’ve been digging for a week but still I can’t find the answer to these questions:

  • setup a controller assignment on the fly (right click on whatever parameter → Learn → move knob: done - like Ableton or Logic.

  • setup my MIDI Fighter Twister so that everytime I open a Synth I have Amp ADRS and Filter ADSR and other meaningful parameters always mapped across all projects and as a default for new ones.
And keep mapping other parameters when necessary using the simple “Ableton/Logic like” method above.

I could only find tuts on how to setup QControls but I don’t want to be limited by only 8 parameters.
Been a novice with Nuendo I’m not even sure what to look for on YT

Any help is super appreciated.

In that case, it would be a good idea to explore the Remote Control Editor of each instrument plug-in. Re-order parameters around so that they suit you. Create a MIDI remote, and a page to control the instrument parameters of the selected track.

Thanks gg!
Remote Control Editor seems to be the what I was looking for.
I’m stuck at this point tho’: how do I let RCE and the MIDI Remote talk to each other?
I’ve setup a n° of parameters in the RCE but I can’t find any reference to the RCE in the Functions Browser of the MIDI Remote so I don’t how to assign those to the MIDI Fighter Twister

Hi, it’s under Selected Track→Instrument→Parameters. You can even change the number of parameters (by selecting ==Setup===), or furthermore assign two of your buttons to the Actions→Next/Previous Plugin Parameter Bank, or even another one to reset the bank to the very first one.

Thank you m.c.
I’ve been fiddling for 40 mins but even tho I’m using the Selected Track instrument parameters, it only works on that specific instance of Phase Plant.
If I create another instance the mapping doesn’t work.
Which is a bit confusing since “Selected Track” should keep the mapping global for any given selected track?
But obvs I’m getting Nuendo’s logic wrong XD
Could you please share a bullet point sequence of actions of how to keep the mapping global far a given instrument for just 1 control?
Want to check where I do wrong.

remote test same instrument selected track

What is configured in the RCE should apply to any instance of the instrument plug-in from then on.

In the gif above, I’m using two retrologues to demonstrate. I’m twisting the same knobs. I just switch between the two tracks when I want to control the one or the other. Once track “Retrologue 01” is selected I control the left one. Once track “Retrologue 02” is selected, I control the right one. Where the command goes, it depends on which track is selected. (hence Selected Track).

Make sure that in the mapping assistant you have chosen (Parameters | Instrument | Selected Track) and NOT (Parameters | Plugin | Insert & Strip Effects | Selected Track), because the latter is for plug-ins in the insert section. (you can do the same editing to their RCEs too, and control EQs, compressors etc the way you like for each track)

Thanks gg
Indeed I am using Selected Track
Question:
how do I assign “Amp Env” from page 1 to be the Parameter 1 in the Mapping assistant?

Since you have “Amp Env” in the position 1 as I can see, it should work. However, I see your binding in the screenshot you posted, it’s set to “Project” which is not what we suggested, but no worries.

You should open the suggested location and bind “Parameter 1” to your controller.

After opening the MIDI Remote Mapping Assistant Window as shown in the screenshot (forget about the VST and its Remote Editor at this point), select the “Parameter 1” element at the right side of the window, then click on the control at the left side of the window you want it assigned to, and finally click on “Apply Mapping”. This way, you’ll have a “Global” assignment to your controller’s knob (or whatever element you need) to the “Parameter 1” and you can continue with the other parameters.

Thank a bunch m.c.

unfortunately still does not apply to the other instance of Super 8 I created from scratch and had track selected
This is each step I’ve done:
1- created a track with Super 8
2- opened Mapping Assistant
3- Functions - Selected Track - Intrument - Parameters
4- clicked on Parameter 1
5- moved the Amp Attack (Mapping Assistant detected it)
6- Moved the knob (Mapping Assistant detected it)
7- Apply Mapping (Global)
Works

Then

  • Created another track with another Super 8
  • Selected Track 2

But knob only works on Super 8 in Track 1

Super curious to know what the heck I’m missing

just a little ping for whoever knows

Why is it saying Unison Voices up top and Amp Envelope Attack in the assignments list?

Are you closing the mapping assistant before checking if the assignment works? I don’t think the assignments work while the mapping assistant is open.

Hi, as I’ve previously mentioned, please totally ignore the presence of the VST and the controller. In your Step 5, you’re actually assigning the AmpAttack (and NOT Parameter 1 in a generic-global way, though it seems it does so).

After step (4) just select the corresponding knob on the UI and click on “Apply Mapping”.

Here’s a screenshot with the steps involved in my suggestion:

After the above we can now see this:

image

Note that we have assigned our knob to a “generic” Parameter 1, not to a very specific VST parameter. This way we can now safely use this knob for every single vstI out there at whichever selected track, to control its very first parameter that we have assigned in our remote control editor.

Thank you so much both

I’ve found out how to make it work

I was previously confused by this line "(forget about the VST and its Remote Editor at this point) thinking that RCE is not needed anymore.
But turned out I got it wrong and is indeed needed to specify what a Parameter actually is on a given VST.

For whoever will need this in the future:

HOW TO ASSIGN PARAMETERS IN THE RCE (Remote Controller Editor)
Let’s map Amp Attack as an example.

  • create a VST track
  • right click on the header and open the Remote Controller Editor
  • You’ll find 8 slots per Page: Slot 1 = Parameter 1, Slot 2 = Parameter 2 etc…
  • Set the RCE in Learn Mode and select Slot 1
  • Click on Amp:Attack on the VST
  • Exit Learn mode and click on Apply in the RCE (upper right)

HOW TO MAP THE CONTROLLER

  • Open Mapping assistant
  • Nuendo Functions
  • Selected Track→Instrument→Parameters
  • Click on Parameter 1
  • Move the knob on the controller
  • Double Click on Parameter 1 (same as “Apply Mapping”)
    Done

Now anytime you open that VST (and the track is selected) that knob is always assigned to Amp:Attack

If you need more Parameters then click on ===Setup=== right above and add to your likings.

Make sure to set it to Global so that it’ll work on any project

Thank you so much m.c. and gg for all the help

Hey, I just did the whole process of assigning MIDI to Super 8 from NI so that anytime I open it is alreayd mapped.

It works on the first instance but not on the second one in track 2. It’s the same plugin but on the second one mapping doesn’t apply even tho I set it to global.
I thought the mapping was designed to work on the selected track?

If I right click on the second instance of Super 8, right click and open the Remote Controller Editor, as you can see the assignments are there.

Seems all correct to my eye here?

Only if you set it up as such.

It’s clear in your assignments page that you have chosen to control the first instance of Super 8. (Super 8 1| Slot | Super 8 1)

great to know it’s possible

but how do I set it up ?

I’m a bit confused since I thought that the “Selected Tracks” was covering this case? Whatever track you have selected, if there’s a Super 8, I’ll let you control that.

But in the picture, I see only one assignment for Selected Track, and it’s parameter 1. Which should control Filter Cutoff Frequency, according to the RCE, for any Super 8 in the project, as long as the relevant track is selected.

The highlighted assignment just beneath that one tells the MIDI remote to control Amp Envelope Attack, for the track Super 8 1, no matter what track you have selected.

With this type of assignment, each time you select a track, and that track has a Super 8 on it, the first knob would control Cutoff, the second Resonance, the third Envelope Amount, the fourth Character, the fifth Velocity, etc etc. As they are listed in the RCE.

Then, if you select another track that has a different instrument, you go into that instrument’s RCE to find out what the controls would be, and you change them around from there (the RCE) if they don’t suit you. If that instrument is on another 8 tracks, no problem. Select the right track, and you control it.

Thanks GG!
now I got it finally. It was that tiny bit I was missing.

I’ve got one more question about quick controls which is giving me a big head scratch

Yesterday I’ve mapped few knobs on FilterFreak (just QControls) and I’m assuming that if the little square on the top right gets lit it should have the focus and the same knob I’ve mapped on the Super 8, now should control the FilterFreak.

As you can see my Keylab’s 8 knobs are assigned by def to the QC

But if I put FF on focus, the knob is still controlling the Super 8

ok now I’m uber puzzled

I wanted to redo all the mappings from scratch for the Super 8 but now this is happening
