MIDI expert wanted: Continuous Controller Messages

Related to my other thread No percussion sound - Dorico - Steinberg Forums I have some questions:

My MIDI keyboard (Behringer U-Control UMX49, connected via USB cable) continuously sends Controller Messages to my computer as you can see in this short log:

Is this a normal behaviour of a MIDI keyboard?

Can these Controller Messages cause changes to the Quick Controllers in HSSE?

Thomas

PS: All rotary controls of the keyboard are set to “0”.

No it’s not normal behaviour.
It should send these controllers only when you move the physical knob/button associated.

You may want to check out this thread about controllers that are generating continuous sysex data

Perhaps your situation is related.

I certainly wouldn’t expect a MIDI controller keyboard to send out these messages unless you were actively moving the controls. I think that HALion does respond to some of these controllers so that will be having an effect on playback.

I think there’s two likely reasons for why these messages are being sent. One is that there’s a software glitch in the keyboard, so you could try doing a factory reset on it (hold down ASSIGN and press both OCTAVE SHIFT buttons). The other reason could be that there’s dust in the controls so it’s sending out random messages. Try using a can of compressed air to see if that will blast the dust away.

Doing a factory reset stops the continuous controller messages for a while. But although I don’t touch the keyboard, they start again after a minute or so.

I’ll try cleaning the controls with comprressed air.

Thank you for your advice, Paul.

Thomas

Since it’s CC1 I would pay attention to the mod wheel and maybe massage that a bit

Check the next column - there’s a variety of controllers including cc10, cc91 and cc73, which suggests problems with a number of controls

Indeed, but oddly random… I’d suspect a bad power supply (wrong voltage?) or bad batteries… or USB Voltage too low… failing that return for replacement…

fratveno,
you‘re right. It was the power supply. Seems, that the keyboard doesn‘t get enough power via USB cable. I applied some batteries and the Controller Messages stopped.

Thank you,

Thomas
