MIDI file naming help

Anyone know of a way to make default midi filenames something to do with the track? At the moment they default to incomprehensible numbers which is really hard if you are transferring shows to other people / vst live users and they lose their mapping. Like say I have the song ‘Mr Brightside’. All the audio and such is in the folder ‘Mr Brightside’ and have their names (Mr Brightside click etc) but the MIDI files I create in VST live save to a separate MIDI folder. And its not Mr Brightside Kemper changes, or Mr Brightside lights (as the track names) but a massive list of numbers that I then have to manually retarget. However, but I’ve no idea how to know which ones which in the song - song media - song media files as its just a list or numbers! Am I missing the way to do this?

Normally you should not worry about MIDI files, because:

  1. copy/paste between songs inside the VST Live works good.
  2. import/export between softwares works good.
  3. transfereing from device to device works good if you do that in right way - Save Archive. And you should need to do that anyway to clean up the house - collect files for one sandbox.
  4. create every new project or single song in temporary folder, save it there and when it’s finished, Save Archive to desired place and you will have everything in one place. Then you can remove everything in temporary folder.
  5. to collect all your songs in one project, save them in MediaBay, then open that project and drag and drop all songs in it. MediaBay songs are in place you mentioned in Preferences. It also isstructured as project folder with the same numeric-named files. In MediaBay you create one folder for each song - there you will see those numeric-named files that corresponds only to this song.

As they did with MIDI and other objects that have numbers in their names in project’s subfolders, is the right way just to lower the possibility to copy/move files around and therefore do something bad on whole project. Take it as a law!

BTW these rare situations when I needed to manage those files on disk are not the cause to ask for additional file management in VST Live and naming. I did my tasks even the filenames are from another galaxy :wink:
