I want to verify my assumption using a Midi Keyboard for drum notation.
I mapped the drumset with Addictive Drums VST. All is good using computer keyboard. I decided to try my Piano keyboard to make entries a abit faster.
questions:
- I’m assuming that I would take to midi notes that i mapped in Addictive Drums and translate the midi notes to the keyboard. So if the Kick drum is mapped to Midi note 64, I would use octave 3E.
Some mapped correctly. But a few did not. for example, The Ride Bell is midi note 63 (3D#). When displayed, the note head should be a Diamond, but takes on the Ride Cymbal Bow symbol X?
- Since the midi notes from Addictive Drums ranges from Octave 1 - Octave 5, i’m wondering is i should remap using octave 3 and 4 for convenience and easier finger movements on the keyboard?
Sorry for my confusion, lots to learn as i move forward
thankx
For input into percussion kits via MIDI keyboard, you can choose between two approaches: either you can input according to the pitches defined in the percussion map, or you can input according to the staff position of the instrument as you have defined it in the kit. Which of those two options are you using?
@dspreadbury
ooooo i get what your asking now… had to think about it :thinking and read the operators manual again on page 252.
I had setup the percussion map with Addictive Drums using staff position.
So if I setup the percussion map using Midi keyboard, then I’m committed for note input using the midi keyboard and NOT using the computer keyboard up/down arrows) to input the notes… correct?
I now created another percussion map with an empty Addictive Drums Map. Using the Midi keyboard, mapped all the drumset notes. When I enter C (48) kick drum, i get a hihat foot note on the staff? Is there something else i need to do to gwt the correct note head defined in the playing techniques?
sorry for my confusion still learning Dorico
thankx for your help and input
You can input either using the MIDI keyboard or using the computer keyboard, but if you use the computer keyboard, you do of course have to either input using the staff position (e.g. type F for a note in the bottom space) or by moving the caret to the desired position and then hitting Y to input a note on that instrument.
When playing with your MIDI keyboard, though, Dorico will follow the setting I mentioned from the Note Input and Editing page of Preferences. Make sure the entries in your custom percussion map are all correct.
@dspreadbury Hi daniel,
Just creating another project template so i can check if the percussion mapping is working correctly .
I needed to setup the Routing for Addictive Drums… In track Inspector, pulldown has Addictive Drums. But I don’t see Addictive Drums in the Perc Map ? When i go into VST and Midi, go to the endpoint setup , I also do not see Addicative Drums in the Percussion Map pulldown?
If i go to my other project, everything is setup correctly with the Addictive Drums in the percussion map entries.
Does this make any sense?
thankx again
You’ll need to export the percussion map you created in the original project and then import it into your new project. This is done in the Library > Percussion Maps dialog.
Daniel thankx again…gotta keep reading the manual…it’s all there.
Now to figure out why using midi keyboard the notes on the keyboard don’t reflect what i mapped with Addictive Drums and playing technique.
I’ve never used a midi keyboard to enter drumset notes.
Question:
- how are the keys mapped to the staff position? or are they? for example, if a hit A on the Kybd, should that note be placed on the A staff position (-1 in the Setup->Edit Percussion Kit display )?
