Midi learn with Audio Insert plugins

Hello,

I have Cubase Artist 9.5 and I’m attempting to use midi learn with the plugins that I have assigned as Audio Inserts. The plugins I’m using are capable of midi learn but when I right click a plugin control and select midi learn the midi CC data does not register with the plugin. The midi learn works fine with regular virtual instruments I have assigned to tracks so I know there isn’t an issue with my midi/hardware setup.

Is there some sort of routing I need to do to have the midi data reach my audio insert plugins?

I realized I didn’t mention that the audio insert plugins are effect plugins. So basically I’m trying to find a way to control effect plugins that are audio inserts on a track through midi. Thanks.
