Sorry for the late. So, first of all, I needed to build a new mapping for the Novation. A very simple progression of Control Change, see the pic.
At this point, you can easily build a map into Cubase using the learning mode.

I really appreciate you taking the time and steps here. So once you make the new template you have to import it back to the controller, correct?, and then begin mapping (Automap off) ?
I will take an attempt at this soon and let you know if I run into any trouble
Yes, Automap absolutely off.
Hi!.. Novation ReMote 61SL user here. I found this thread while searching for how to make the ReMote SL work with cubase 12pro. How did it go for you?.. Any progress?..
Gliese581g,
it ought to be easy with the Remote Map assistant. I’m still on C11 - and I mapped the Remote SL61 for Cubase 11. You can edit ANY button in the controller. You just need to do a little experimenting and know hex/dec numbers.
I use Automap, but only for User (=MIDI) pages. It gives you TONS and TONS of possibilites to do… With those I control Quick/VST controls and other stuff. P

How far did you eventually get?
I have the same two controllers as you, but I’ve been using the USB cable to set them both up. Still building templates’ for my various needs.
You say you’ve been using MIDI Cables’, how is it panning out for you?.
Just curious if using MIDI Cables has more benefits’.
If you don’t mind sharing.
Would also like to add, I seem to have Automap v4.13b (added CB10 support) , working in CB12, but the controllers’ don’t seem as responsive.
Hi!.. sorry for taking so long to answer, I’ve been experimenting and here’s what I concluded:
I managed to do a working template for my SL61 (mk1) and at first I was glad that even the raw select buttons on the controller could be used to whatever function you desired (like opening plugins, etc), BUT… the 8 endless encoders can’t be used for anything at all! – the Cubase Remote simply doesn’t accept them, or the values just jump around totally useless!.. That’s a big drawback, I always loved my novation exactly for the sheer number of controls (all 24 of them, plus the 24 switches!). Also, with the new Cubase12 Remote one can only use 8 Quick controls at a time per plugin. That, compared with Automap, is a big step backward, IMHO… I think that we, SL mk1 and MKII owners better stick with Automap, especially if you have dozens of carefully automaped plugins like I do. Also, contrary to what I’ve been told, Automap 4.13b2 (and at least 4.13, I presume, even though Novation will no longer update it) still works very well with Cubase12, you just have to add Novation Automap as a device in the Studio Setup. However,in the new MIDI Remote of Cubase12 you’ll have to disable whatever template you attempted to do for your SL mk1, just open MIDI Remote Manager in the lower half of cubase, click the scripts tab and, select the template you did for your SL and click Disable Script. After this, you can go back to use Automap as before. Much better, Cubase Remote still has a veeeery long way to go before it can reach the level of Automap. That’s it, as far as I’m concerned, I’m back to good old Novation Automap even in Cubase 12pro!
Automap has been working perfectly with every version of Cubase for me , To get it working in 12 you need an older version no higher than 10.5/11 and point the automap setup to Wrap Cubase 12 plugins . ,once you have done that , turn off the comp reboot and automap will work , ive edited loads of templates and control all functions on my SSl plugin with no problems at all .
The midi remote app is still too disfunctional for any form of swapping over .
I would rather call it Limited, when compared with Automap – I mean, only 8 QuickControls at a time??.. Steinberg, you guys need to take a look at the Novation Automap and try to develop the MIDI Remote section of Cubase into something like that.
I wonder why Novation discontinued development , still nothing comes close to it for integration with Cubase
Right, they even were awarded a medal or something by the Queen when they invented the system – seriously, I remember seeing it on the news and felt truly like a “proud owner” when I saw that on the TV (and outside the UK, on Portuguese TV news, mind you!)
It could be because Rupert Neve bought Novation and i think his companies had the royal seal of approval , Novation have the best tech support on the planet , sending out new boards for obsolete gear free of charge if in stock .
Anyway , i find the best way with automap is just open the template modifier and click on the control , save and job done , that simple , no having to ,make buttons ,knobs ,faders ,bla bla bla
Hi.
I know this thread is quite old now, but I’m quite new to Novation and Automap. I have set it up in Cubase 12 but my notes from the Novation (25SL) aren’t playing (triggering VSTs) I can adjust the mixing desk faders, pans etc, but no notes.
It is able to play notes into Sibelius and registers on the display in Cubase on the bottom right, (little VU,) but no notes!
I’ve also tried recording using it in Cubase to see if it was transmitting MIDI data at all but no!
Any suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks
@danmccaughern – after selecting the track you want to play/record have you checked in the inspector if your 25SL is included in the MIDI inputs of that track?.. by default it is set to “All”, click there and see if the 25SL is included in the list, try to put it only for the 25SL instead of “All” and see if the MIDI in signal reaches that track by looking at the little meter in the extreme right of that track. If it doesn’t reach there, something is not well configured. Also remember that you MUST turn on your 25SL BEFORE loading Cubase12!
Hi. Thanks for the suggestion.
Actually, I checked that and did as you suggested a few days ago. Then I decided that I would install the latest V12 of Cubase and during installation I was pointed to the Novation.
I think I need a bit of time getting to know the Novation too. I’m a bit scared to alter anything in case it throws a wobble again!
Thanks again for your comments.
so, is it working now?.. if not, you should consult the SL25 manual, the section of MIDI and Automapp configuration and check in cubase (in the Studio menu) if everything is checked as it should. I’m still using cubase 12.
Hi. Yes it’s working great now. I’ve just discovered the Automap icon at the bottom of the screen and switching between Cubase and VSTis. I thought that I had to use the templates to go from one to another. I’ll certainly read the sections you mention. It will make more sense now I’m a bit more au fait with the software!
Thanks again
Dan
I’ve never used templates, it’s much more practical for me to keep Automap open (generally in a 2nd screen), open a VST and the Automap will automatically show it’s controls. Of course I made personalized layouts for the ones I use the most, the default automatic layout is too confusing, many times controls that should be knobs are in switches and so on… But one can easily exchange them just by dragging them to the right place. The advantage of the automatic layout is only that one has not to be assigning controls manually by Midi learning. I just create a new empty Automap page and use it as a place to interchange the controls while I’m organizing them to my taste, so that I will not need to delete anyone if there’s no empty places to move them around.
Wow. You’re miles ahead of me!
I’m looking forward to getting some time to try and set it up like the way you’ve described. (My wife’s Christmas prep tends to eat up my time a bit!)
When you say you drag a knob to replace a switch or visa versa, how does the software “know” how to react? Are you using Cubase’s MIDI learning for that bit?
