When I import a standard MIDI file into Cubase 14 and assign HALion as the instrument, some MIDI notes do not stop—they keep playing endlessly as if Note Off messages are ignored. The same file works perfectly in Cubase 13 with the same settings.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Open Cubase 14 (latest version).
- Import a MIDI file (type 1).
- Assign HALion Sonic as the instrument.
- Play the project.
Expected Result:
Notes should play and stop as defined in the MIDI data.
Actual Result:
Some notes hang and continue sounding even after playback has stopped. “All Notes Off” or Note Off messages don’t seem to be working properly.
Additional Info:
- Works fine in Cubase 13
- Same preferences and settings
- OS: [Windows 11]
- Cubase 14 version: [14.0.20]
Any ideas? Is this a known bug?

Hi and welcome to the forum,
What Audio Device do you use, please? Could you try to change the Buffer Size?
Thank you for your reply!
I’m using the original RME Babyface Pro (first generation).
The buffer size is already set to the maximum value, 2048 samples, but the issue still occurs.
Let me know if there’s anything else I can try.
Hi,
Try to increase the Buffer Size, just for test.
Hi,
I’ve already set the buffer size to the maximum value of 2048, but I can’t increase it any further. Also, reducing the buffer size doesn’t seem to change the issue.
Hi,
Sorry… Try to decrease the Buffer Size, just for test.
I tried reducing the buffer size, but the issue remains the same.
Hi
the problem is reportedly known.
Temporary solution: On MIDI channel 10, change the setting from GM map to no drum map .

You’re very welcome!
The issue was resolved by changing the setting on MIDI channel 10.
I was really stuck because when I emailed the Japanese technical support, they told me they couldn’t reproduce the problem. It seems like it’s not known at all in Japan.
I’m very grateful for the high level of support provided on this forum.

Hi,
Oh, I see, it was only the MIDI Channel 10. Then this is a known issue.

Good! Does it will be fixed in the next update?

I hope it will be fixed in the next update. I understand the workaround, so there’s no rush, but if possible, I would appreciate it.
I have a good feeling Steinberg will address the bug rather sooner than later.
