Midi outputs are always wrong after closing and opening a project

Hello,

I create a project with a midi instrument, EZDrummer 3. I create a midi track and set the output of that midi 01. EZdrummer 3 - MIDI Input, see the attachment. The routing works and the midi is sent to the EZdrummer 3 VSTi. I save the project.

I close it and reopen the project. The midi track is now routed to the output Focusrite USB MIDI for no obvious reasons. Whats wrong here, how can I prevent this? The output should just stay on 01. EZdrummer 3 - MIDI Input for that midi track.

Any ideas how to configure Cubase 14 to keep the output on midi channels?

Best Regards

My first question would be - why would you create another MIDI track in addition to the instrument track? Why not put your MIDI parts on the instrument track itself? Just curious…

I have tried the same here, but I cannot reproduce it. Output of the MIDI track stays on EZDrummer after closing and re-opening the project.

Hi,

to have kicks, snares etc. each on separate tracks.

Do I have to open a case at Steinberg for this? I don’t understand why such a behavior should be wanted, it’s very tedious.

Well, as I wrote, it doesn’t happen with my Cubase 14, no problems at all, so it is maybe specific to your setup. Is this with all projects or just the one?

You could try starting Cubase in safe mode with preferences disabled to see if that makes a difference.

I am still baffle, so you have one MIDI track each for kick, snare and so on? Gotta be honest, that is something that sounds rather tedious to me… Why would I want that? Isn’t it much easier to have them all on one track? Or has this something to do with recording MIDI from a E-Drum set?

Hi,

thank you. Unfortunately, starting Cubase 14 with preferences disabled did not help, still the same problem.

For instance, if you want the drums replaced later by real drums and you want to have them recorded the modern way, it’s an advantage. Also, it is of advantage if you program drums and want to make sure that it’s possible to play the drums the way you programmed them. Easier to check that what you programmed is playable using 2 hands if you have all instruments on separate tracks.

As a workaround, if you don’t need the Focusrite MIDI port, you could try setting that to “invisible “ in the studio setup dialog?

Can you change the midi input to EZ Drummer?

Hi and thank you for the replies. The following worked for me:

  • I unplugged the Focusrite device
  • Uninstalled the Focusrite device driver, reenabled the onboard audio driver
  • Opened the project in Cubase using the generic ASIO driver, saved it
  • Disabled the onboard audio driver, plugged in the Focusrite device and reinstalled the Focusrite driver

Now the midi routing is correct after reopening a project.
