I’m using Cubase 10.5, along with the standard Steinberg MIDI instruments. The recorded instruments randomly (it seems) slip off the assigned pitches. So I hear the instruments playing a step higher or lower, and I can’t find a solution or cause.
For example, with Halion Sonic7, piano, bass, flute, and etcetera go wild. Sometimes I reboot, and then the instruments are fine, but the next time around, the instruments slip off the pitch. In the MIDI editing window, I see the pitches are correct. When I touch a note on the screen, it sounds the correct pitch. But when I play the track, the notes are off. I’ve tried manually moving the section up or down, and sometimes they begin to play in key. But then they lose track again.
I’m using a Komplete Kontrol A25, if that might have a bearing on the issue.
This issue is driving me nuts, and I hope someone can give some clues about how to solve this recurring problem.

In previous cases with similiar symptoms the root cause was often a hardware midi device sending pitch bend data unexpectedly.
In order to check if that is the case you could detach any external midi device, press Reset from the Cubase MIDI menu and then start playback.

Johnny, thanks for answering me.
This issue started before I kept my outboard MIDI keyboard plugged in all the time. I think there is something else going on.
It seems like this started all at once a while back. Could I have made a mistake with the MIDI controls in my DAW that is causing my tracks to go crazy? Or could an application I loaded for the my computer have put some kind of bug in place?

I should mention that I did try the solution you presented. Did not work for me, however.
With MIDI it takes just one device to send some unwanted or unexpected data and then the track sounds weird.
You can use the MIDI plugin “MIDI Monitor” on one of the track as an insert plugin and have a look what is being transmitted.
I have found that when I click MIDI > Reset, the MIDI notes return to normal. I’ll keep you posted if this continues to work.
I’m watching demos for MIDI Monitor. Thanks for the lead.
Regarding my message about how I’ve used MIDI Reset… It works instantly to bring the MIDI track back to pitch, but soon the track goes wild again, and then I do the reset again. Over and over.
I was able to export the file to MP3 without issue. I exported in real time and in the quicker mode as well.
All of your described symptoms sound like a hardware midi device sending pitch bend data.
The MIDI keyboard is disconnected. Could the Steinberg patch be sending random pitch bend information?
Meanwhile, I found a work around for my issue – Freezing the problem MIDI tracks. But I would love to find and fix the root cause.
The aforementioned MIDI Monitor should show that.
On the MIDI tracks, in the Inspector window, I changed the value to Not Connected. The tracks play without flaw.
This is a picture of the MIDI Monitor.
