Midi Through toggles itself

This is starting to look like a bug on Dorico Pro 6 - Once in a while during work, I’m starting to hear the Dorico sounds while playing my keyboard. I have MIDI through is set to off - but I now need to turn it on and off again in order to have Dorico stop playing back software sounds.

Any advice?

Thanks!

I don’t know, but is there maybe a keyboard shortcut assigned to that switch and you unintentionally trigger it?

Thanks, but there shouldn’t be such a shortcut, and if there was one, I assume the “MIDI through” box would be checked when MIDI through is turned on by it? Even when I hear the MIDI play, the box is still unchecked- I need to check it, apply, and then uncheck and apply again for the MIDI to stop playing.

I don’t know if there should or not be a key command for it, fact is, as I just found out, yes, it is possible to have a shortcut for Toggle MIDI Thru. By default it is not assigned but you can do if you like.
And if you don’t have an assignment for it, I have no clue of how that toggling can happen otherwise with you.

I did assign a key command to it - but for some reason it doesn’t do anything. (All my other programmed shortcuts work fine).

So, to recap… I have a shortcut that doesn’t do anything for MIDI through toggle - the jump bar command for it also doesn’t change anything. And on the other hand, MIDI through toggles itself randomly - but the box for MIDI through always stays unchecked even when it’s on - so I need to turn it on (even though it IS on), and off again if I don’t want to hear the MIDI through, until the next time it turns on randomly. (and I should add that my keyboard shortcut has 4 modifiers, it’s not one that I could hot by mistake).

Any advice?

Thanks

I suspect your shortcut does in fact do something. Doesn’t that seem like the most likely explanation?

Not really… when I try to use the shortcut I don’t see any change in the checkbox of the MIDI through, nor is there any change in what I hear when I play my MIDI keyboard - that’s why I stopped trying to use it after a few attempts. The random toggling of MIDI through happens on completely different occasions and I’m definitely not hitting shift-control-option-command-M by mistake without noticing…

Next time you encounter this, immediately do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file here. It should provide a clue.

Hi,

Is there any specific file from the Diagnostics I should send? The whole folder is too large for the system here.

We need the Dorico and AudioEngine subfolders the most. So if you unpack the original zip and then create a Dorico.zip and AudioEngine.zip then it should be small enough to be posted here.

Here are the folders -

When this report was created MIDI through was supposedly off (“Preferences->play->Enable MIDI Thru” was un-checked), but was actually on (playing my MIDI keyboard produced sound from Dorico). I didn’t do anything to change the MIDI thru setting for a while before - it just came on on its own.

Thanks!

AudioEngine.zip (2.9 MB)
Dorico.zip (3.1 MB)

Thanks. I will take a look later. A little patience please

Thanks a lot!

On a Sunday in August???

I don’t know what time it is anymore. We have 14 degree Celcius and constantly rain pouring down on us. Is this what we call summer time?

Hi @roeeli ,
in your Dorico.zip is a file called keycommands_en.json. If you open that in a text editor and go to line 135 you will see:

    "NoteInput.ToggleMIDIThru" : [ "Meta+Ctrl+Alt+Shift+M" ]

So I guess that by accident you sometimes hit that special key combination and therefore toggle that value.

Thanks - this sounds convincing, but there a couple of problems with this theory:

1 - That’s not a key combination one might hit by mistake, certainly not as many times as this problem occurred on my machine.

2 - When I do hit this combination on purpose, it does absolutely nothing.

3 - The “Toggle MIDI thru” checkbox is still un-checked, even when MIDI thru is obviously on. I need to check it, apply, uncheck it and apply again for MIDI thru to stop working.

I deleted the key command combination, as it doesn’t work anyway (which is weird by itself) - I’ll upload the new diagnostics files when the problems re-occurs.

Thanks for your help (on a Sunday!!)

Well, on my computer there was no shortcut assigned to that toggle function, so I did assign one and it works as expected.
Anyway, get back when you run into trouble again.

Just happened again, but both folders (audio engine and Dorico) are over 4MB this time, so I can’t send them here. Where can I send it to? or do you need specific files from within these folders?

I did notice this happened after I switched to FInale and Logic and back to Dorico, might this have something to do with the MIDI thru switching itself on?

Thanks!

Hi @roeeli, you can send me attachments up to 10MB to u dot stoermer at steinberg dot de

For anything bigger please use file sharing services like e.g. DropBox, WeTransfer, etc.

And I don’t see how Logic or Finale could change the MIDI Thru value in Dorico, so it stays a bit mysterious, but please send the files and we’ll see
