Missing rests in measures in transferred finale document

This in a document that was transferred from finale, with nothing special in it in terms of note entry, just usual classical orchestra stuff. Certain measures are missing rests in this document, no matter how many time I try to copy another measure or re-enter the notes. What the hey?

Note that it is measure specific, the first measure is fine but the second is missing the first quarter rest in two french horns.

When I move the line one quarter beat to the left, a rest appears at the end of the measure.

Later in the piece there are full measures of rests missing

Try clicking the note or rest just before the missing rest, and open the Properties panel. If the ā€œEnds Voiceā€ property is set, turn it off, and your missing rests should reappear.

With XML issues it’s really hard to know if the issue is with the Finale source file, the XML exported by Finale, or Dorico’s interpretation of it on import. If you want to zip up the original Finale file and post it, I’ll see if I get the same results exporting from Finale then importing into Dorico on my system.

Nope, not that, thanks though!

I prefer not to post this music publicly. It’s fine if it is just this one file that has a bug. I just wanted to know if it is a common thing in Dorico and how to fix it, but it sounds like it might be a problem with the transfer from xml.

Make sure you show all signposts (view>signposts…). It is possible that you have independent time signatures in the xml.

If you haven’t already, in Finale I’d run Plug-ins / Check Region for Durations and Data Check / File Maintenance on the original file. See if any issues come up and if so, correct them. Then re-export the XML and try importing it again to see if you get the same results.

In Preferences > MusicXML Import (which is on the Dorico menu on Mac or the Edit menu on Windows), is the Rest Visibility setting ticked or unticked?

If it’s ticked, try unticking it and importing the MusicXML file again.
