Missing Samples

Can anyone tell me where I can find missing samples? I am trying to download my sound libraries to an external drive so it doesn’t take up space on my computer, but I may have not saved everything where it should go. I am trying to find something called SESPnoHi(021)LC_NML.wav. Any ideas where this could be?

Would Steinberg’s Library Manager program be any help here. Certainly one would need it to move the files elsewhere.

First a little explanation: Steinberg contents files come as so called VSTSound archives, they contain the actual sample data as well as meta data that describe the preset files. These archives are encrypted and as a user you shall not watch inside. Only Dorico (resp. HALion Sonic) shall do and find the actual sound data inside.
That’s a contradiction, right? HALion Sonic asks you to point it to the missing sound files.
If the VSTSound archives are correctly registered with the MediaBay, then it is fine and it should be able to resolve all those missing files by itself.
During installation the Steinberg Library Manager runs in the background and places the VSTSound archives to the right location and registers them with the MediaBay.
Strictly spoken, the Steinberg Library Manager is not needed to move VSTSound archives around, but it is definitely recommended, because that Library Manager helps not only moving archives but also keeping the MediaBay up to date of where things are to be found, in order that one does not run into this “missing files” problem.
So next my question is, what have you done so far? Have you moved files manually and if yes, how many and where to? If you move them back, does the “missing files” error go away?
If so, then move everything back to where it was before. Then run the Steinberg Library Manager (gets installed along with Dorico) and in there click the Move button for each sound library that you want to be placed on external drive(s). You just specify the target directory, the rest does the Library Manager.

I checked the Library Manager and it looks like some of the files are on my external drive, but I have copies where they were automatically downloaded. I do remember using the Library Manager to move my VST files to the external drive. However, why is it only the piano file that’s missing? I don’t understand why the HALion Symphonic Orchestra is all there except the piano.

The default piano sound in Dorico is not contained in HSO, in fact , HSO does not even have a piano sound. There is of course a piano sound in the General MIDI specification, in case of HALion Sonic that one does sound like kind of okay, but still very poor. The HALion Sonic Selection library inherited a big variety of sounds from Yamaha’s S90 synthesizer, so that is where Dorico gets it’s default piano sound from.
If you look under C:/ProgramData/Steinberg/Content and there search for S90 you should find 2 vstsound files, one with the actual samples, the other one with presets. So one is the raw wave files, the other the meta data that make up the sound from the various sounds.
Can you find 2 such vstsound files?

I found these two:

FCP_SMT_083_HSSE_S90.vstsound
FCP_SMT_084_HSSE_S90_Presets.vstsound

Yes, they are the ones. What if you do a double click on them?
And are they real files or just symbolic links? How big are they?

I actually tried to do a fresh redownload, thinking I could a closer eye on where everything went. However, now I don’t get sound at all. I use Note Performer as my playback template. Nothing makes sound.

Hi @jjhoppermusic ,
please create a new project from solo piano template. That should also create some empty bars. If you switch on the metronome (right to the Play/Recording button) and then start playback, can you hear the metronome beeping? That shall always work, no matter what sound library or VSTinstrument you are using.

There is no metronome sound either…….

@Ulf So, I just did a complete reset. I even referenced a full 17-minute video on sound issues with Dorico (Anthony Hughes). I erased every incidence of Steinberg content on my computer so I could do a fresh reinstall. However, I don’t have any metronome sounds or any instrument sounds. I checked the Library Manager, and it says the files are in the Application Support folder (I use a Mac). I checked that folder and it’s completely empty. So, I’m trying another redownload and I changed the install location to the default, hoping that I will have better luck that way. All I wanted to do was save space on my computer by putting these large sound libraries onto an external drive, and now I seem to have flubbed things up terribly. I’m really hoping for some breakthrough so I can finally get this done.

One is 152 KB and one is 57.2 MB. I attached a photo of what they look like. When I double click on them, it takes me to the Library Manager and it tells me that they have already been registered.

In another post, I saw a request to send a diagnostic report, so I am adding that here.
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (288.8 KB)
