Mixer Reset when changing Playback Templates

Hi!
I’m having this issue that when I change the Playback Template from a project the whole mixer settings are forgotten. ( Inserts, Sends, Mixer Levels)
Is this this intended behavior? Can we have an option to keep the Mixer Settings when changing templates?

Well, at least to say, yes, that is the current behaviour. And I write it down as a feature request to retain the mixer data.

Hi,

Thanks for noting this topic @Ulf.

I am also interested in Mixer Settings being stored in any given Playback Template or alternatively being able to save the mixer settings as a separate mixer profile. I prefer it just be included in Playback Template because that is where the issue of changing VI volumes is encountered and I’m guessing that would be less work for the development team and less potential for hazardous levels being encountered by users, but maybe someone will think of a good reason for a separate “Mixer Settings” save. Just extra step(s) before and after Playback Template changes (save before if not done earlier and a recall after).

I guess a workaround would be for the user to match VI output levels so that when you go back and forth between one and another used for any given instrument, the desired mix is maintained, but that would still require the Dorico mixer levels to be unchanged as you go from one template to another instead of resetting as I believe they do now. Though I can see why you may have reset the levels to minimize chances that hazardous levels might be encountered if someone isn’t careful about such matters. But if the levels were linked with the rest of the playback template I imagine that would be less of a safety issue since someone was already auditioning things and presumably okay with it all before storing settings.

Thank you, Ulf and the rest of the Dorico team, for always having an open ear for our many wishes!

If I might add, I’d also find it helpful if it was possible to switch an instrument – for instance, one acoustic guitar against another – without losing all actual inserts and sends settings of the track. I’m not always aware right from the start which VSTi is best suited for the job and when I’m trying to check out a different one of my arsenal, everything’s gone, even if I have to return to the initial one in the end.

Of course, there is the list of steps I can un-/redo, which I’m really grateful for. But depending on the plugins involved, it doesn’t always run smoothly and (understandably) can’t restore every plugins’ settings if I forgot to save them as a preset. Plus it’s rapidly getting unwieldy if I save a preset of every step I do or undo with every insert.

Another thing that would be a huge time saver is to be able to enter numbers directly into the mixer’s volume faders, pan and sends settings. On my MacBook’s 14" screen, adjusting these settings by mouse always involves a lot of resizing and fiddling – or am I just missing a better way of how to do it efficiently?
Any hints are greatly appreciated!
Thank you.

That would be very helpful.

In Dorico’s mixer on Windows, you can Alt-click on the numerical value for volume, pan or sends, then type the value you want and press Enter.

Yes, and on Mac, it’s Option-click. I can’t believe I’ve missed that! Thank you so much for pointing this out to me!

Some additional notes here for anyone…

I’ve since started using Vienna Ensemble Pro, which makes it pretty easy to mix levels right there and save them. That’s pretty convenient, assuming the desired relative mix of instruments and sections in an orchestra is something I imagine setting and forgetting, which VEPro allows one to you do, and then you share instances (collections) of instruments amongst multiple projects. And I imagine mixing different libraries to sound at approximately the same level there, so switching between them may be relatively painfree once time is invested once to do that and Dorico mixer levels are left alone at their default levels for all of what I’ve said here.

Also discovered that the default mixer channel volume level is a Dorico option. Doesn’t solve the issue we are talking about but related at least. I’ve tweaked mine up 6 dB and will keep an eye on my headroom as I go further…
