Mnemonics for graphic movement?

The key commands for moving things graphically are:

Standard1/4 space for beams; 1/8 space for othersAlt/Opt+arrow
Large1 spaceCtrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt+arrow
Moderate1/2 spaceShift+Alt/Opt+arrow
Small1/32 spaceCtrl/Cmd+Shift+Alt/Opt+arrow

Does anyone have any clever trick for remembering which combination is which? I always find myself guessing until I get the one I want.

Hi @asherber, interesting request.

I don’t have any particular mnemonic method to suggest, unfortunately. I found out that with time it will stick to muscle memory.

Your request though, brought me the idea of making a little Dorico project exercise for those Key Command  I hope it can be somehow helpful (and fun?) to anyone who wants to memorise the different functions:

Dorico file:
move key commands memorize exercise.dorico (1.5 MB)

Video (sorry for the wrong spelling of exercise, I corrected it in the file):

Your discussion and @Christian_R’ great exercise made me want to try to find something (completely wacky!) Let’s think in terms of piano fingerings.

On my (Windows) keyboard, when I use the Ctrl, Shift, and Alt keys, I always use the same fingering: respectively 4, 3, 1.

Now, if we look at the combinations described by @asherber, sorted by increasing movement value, we get this:

Ctrl+Alt+Shift
Alt
Shift+Alt
Ctrl+Alt

Translated into fingerings, that gives us this:

Ctrl+Alt+Shift: 4, 3, 1
Alt: 1
Shift+Alt: 3, 1
Ctrl+Alt: 4, 1

Now, if I subtract the fingerings from each other, I get an increasing sequence.

Ctrl+Alt+Shift: 4-3-1 = 0
Alt: 1 = 1
Shift+Alt: 3-1 = 2
Ctrl+Alt: 4-1 = 3

I’m afraid it’s way too crazy to be actually useful, but I’ll give it a try for a few days

Well, that was my totally useless contribution of the day, sorry for that

Thank you @Christian_R and @charles_piano for your contributions!

After spending some more time with these, I think my brain would be happier if they were in a different order. But it looks like it’s not currently possible to remap these key commands – they don’t seem to show up in the Key Commands preferences, unless I’m missing something.
