Trying to get my head around what the modulators can and can’t do.
Can modulators only work on VST track instruments vs RACK instruments? (Honestly, I’ve never fully understood the difference, and have always just selected “Rack” when adding a new VST. )
When trying to pair the modulator using the LEARN function, I sometimes find the destination track’s WRITE button suddenly engaged, resulting in unintentional automation I have to undo.
Mostly just struggling to consistently successfully assign the LFO to various parameters. For instance, opened an instance of drum machine. Opened a modulator on the track, tried to assign the LFO to change a drum’s pitch, for instance. “a connection could not be established. an error occurred.” Very glitchy – sometimes works, sometimes not. Is it because I have to click from the modulator tab to the drum machine tab? Do all connections need to be visible on screen before you hit LEARN? Not sure how I’d do this, how I’d see the modulator tab (where I’ll hit learn) and the drum machine tab (where I’ll select pitch) at the same time.
2 - Yes, I think I noticed this too.
3 - I haven’t seen that yet… but I’ll keep experimenting.
I have also found that there is noticeable smoothing/slewing going on. Anything that should be ‘instant’ is actually noticeably slow in the corners. (if you know what I mean)
I (half assed) watched the Plugin Boutique Cubase 14 live stream while working… They definitely work on MIDI. You can also use them on the new plugins. The guy in the stream mapped one to the pitch parameter in Shimmer
There are several way to create a connection. In Drum Machine (or any Steinberg plugins and some 3rd party ones) you can right-click the parameter in the plugin and select to add a modulator to it.
You can also open each modulator in its own window, or have Drum Machine in its own window. This way you can see both GUIs at the same time.
Yes, that smoothing/slew was the first thing i noticed. Tried to do some instant square/jump pitch modulation with the lfo. And there’s some tiny fast glides eventhough i’ve selected a pure square. Same with the step sequencer. (Modulating osc1 semi / vst Legend hz)
Yeah, I’m still getting that periodically too (#2 above). And I also can’t figure if it’s something I’m doing wrong, as it doesn’t always happen. Is it when I “turn” the destination knob, vs just touching it? Maybe it’s a bug? Hitting LEARN doesn’t seem like it should trigger “write.”
I cannot get the Shaper modulator to act as a one-shot.
I added the Shaper to an instrument track.
I selected ‘one shot’ and connected kbd MIDI directly and then via a MIDI track and could not get it to trigger.
The LFO modulator works with this setup but lacks the one-shot capability.
Anyone else tried one-shot.
I can get the modulator Shaper effect working in loop mode applied to a control and gated by MIDI. If I switch to one-shot mode, the modulator waveform goes to 0 (flatlines at the middle of the window) and never triggers from a keyboard or a MIDI file.
The modulator connects to the target control just fine but I cannot trigger it in one-shot mode.
Okay, so here is what I do:
I have a track with a Shaper modulator on it. I connect it to a parameter of the track/plugin. I set it to One Shot. I set it from “Sync to project start” to “MIDI”. This will flat-line the display in the modulator.
I create a MIDI track, set the MIDI Out to the Shaper modulator.
While having the MIDI track selected I then can press any MIDI key on my keyboard to trigger a maximum of one cycle of the Shaper.
Let’s say I have a Korg M1 rack instrument and I’d like to use a modulator for Cutoff. How would I proceed? Doesn’t seem straightforward for rack instruments. Thanks!
