Monitors

Hello,
I need to purchase a new monitor and I’m using Cubase 14 and I was wondering what is the best choice…
Ultrawide, curved, standard.
Size - ??
1 or 2 monitor ?
Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
There is no such thing as THE monitor or monitor setup. It all depends on the stuff you are working on and your preferred workflow.

For starters, you might want to describe what you are planning to work on because the list is almost endless…
Describe your room: Are you working in a studio, bedroom, etc…? Large room with high ceilings or minimal cube? What sort of desk do you have? How many speaker systems do you have and how/where are they placed? Are you planning to add more speakers to your system?
What do you want to monitor all the time and what do you want to monitor occasionally?
Budget…?
Most of all, it still remains a matter of personal taste. Chances are, you will try a lot of different things before you end up with something that floats your boat. At least for a while…

My advice: do not overcomplicate things. Look at other professional studios or home studios and try whatever suits your budget.
Oh, and another advice: Think about the placement of your monitor in relation to your speakers. You do not want to mess up the acoustics!

Thanks for replying back to me.

I have good ceiling hight and a I am working in studio basement.

I have a studio desk that was custom made with two speakers stands on either side, I can fit a 32 inch monitor within the space.

like using alot of VST’s and NI plugins, so I find things get in the way alot with Cubase, just cant see things, it would be nice to move things aside.
thanks for your help.

Hi Dev,

I understand that. But first you have to find out what you want/need to monitor most of the time (video, metering, different mixer windows with inputs only or specfic groups, etc). Do you want these things on separate monitors, how big do they have to be and where do you want to place them? Maybe there is a place on your desk for these monitoring tasks? Or do you prefer to work with one huge screen and move things aside if not needed? I can´t answer these questions for you, you have to find out on your own.

One thing for the road, and I am not implying anything and maybe that has been taken care of already. Invest in room treatment, especially if you are working in a basement. This is something that really pays off.

I do post-production, sound for tv basically. Editing quite a bit, cleanup, some sound design and then mixing.

I got the SAMSUNG 34-Inch SJ55W Ultrawide 3440 x 1440p

Positives:
Price
Width, I’ll never go narrower if I can avoide it!
Resolution, good.
Image quality is solid (not great)

Slight Negative:
Height, I realize now I could use a bit more height. During editing I end up scrolling a bit up and down and if I could do less of that I would love it. Then again, I would still need to scroll some so not sure how much of a difference it makes.

During work I typically have my project window on this monitor with the two panes to the left open most of the time. Plugin windows generally pop up there. On my older 1920x1200 monitor to the side I have different items depending on the workspace I have set up. Video, several meters and the automation panel. Or markers, connections, export dialog.

I have my main ultrawide set up below the woofer level so that my 5.1 system all is line-of-sight. No weird reflections. Smaller monitor off to my left and even lower. I look at the mixers only now and then so they are mostly closed.

Totally agree with Reco29 that you should think about what you do and how you do it and take it from there. That’s really the only way you’ll find your best solution.

Another thing to consider would be buying a monitor arm for your monitor - so basically your monitor is floating in space rather than occupying space on your desktop.
I just got one before Xmas, and I can’t believe I didn’t do this years ago. I have a Samsung 34" Ultrawide monitor so I have liberated significant desktop space for midi-controller, mouse/Keyboard etc.

The way the desk and speakers are designed I can only use one monitor, it sounds like ultrawide 30" is what I will be looking at.

Thanks for the conversation.

Consider a 4k curved monitor. For me, the finer resolution and greater height is more important than being ultra-wide. I use a Samsung UR59C, 3840 x 2160, 32”. Actually, I have two at two different workstations — one for software development and another for DAW and music notation.
