I wanted to add a Gate to my global Vocals Stack. Then I realized, that I already used all of my 4 Insert Slots. I know I could work around this, but long story short - I’d love not-to-have-to and would like to have more Inserts per Stack available out of the box. Not urgent, not absolutely necessary - but it would make the world a little bit better
12 are absolutely enough, thanks. Can someone explain me the principle behind this? Sometimes I really struggle with the underlying concept of VST Live. Why have this at two different places? How are you using it?
A song’s group belongs to the song, but the group is global. For example, I attach effects to them and send sound from the same stack to them via sends, and mix in delay or reverb effects.
The output in the mixer, which you create as an additional one, can be sent to it from the stack and from any groups, or a click can be directed to it separately. My card can output up to 24 channels, and then it’s up to your imagination to group or split them.
I don’t use a regular stack. Due to a bug in version 2, if you create, say, 2-3 parts, each with its own stack, and send it to a group or song group, then even in the part of the song where, for example, sending to FX isn’t necessary, sound still occurs even if there’s no send. Oh well, it’s unlikely anyone will fix version 2 anymore. I don’t know if it’s present in version 3.
Different places. Imagine you have guitar (or mic, or anything else) with four pedals - here it is Stack with 4 inserts. Another 2 pedals are FX sends in the same Stack. You configure your Stacks and save in MediaBay and recall them wherever you need in other songs and parts.
So you have your “pedal board” configured, saved, loaded and then you just use up to 8 inserts in Mixer to add aditional processing and send signal to FX groups like it is ordinary track in your project.
@sergeantt67@Falfango@ArthurNeeman
Thanks for your explainations. I understand that this is (beside other workarounds) a way to go. To stay with Arthurs example I think the possibility to have my „six pedal boards chained on stage“ is still a better way, where I don‘t have to think about how „the real world“ fits best into VST Live. To have my „pedal chain“ recallable in the Media Bay is another benefit (hope I didn‘t miss out, that there are recallable Mixer settings in the Media Bay as well).
As said, this is nothing I need to have, but if developers stumble over this codesection some day and remember this wish, sometimes it‘s a „hey, we can do that without recreating the whole application“ - sometimes it‘s not.
So @sergeantt67@Falfango@ArthurNeeman wouldn‘t it still make sense (esp. for newbees and a cleaner „setup“) to have more inserts at the Stack side or does VST Live want to be the application that you can only master, if you know all the „tricks“? Where do we want to go? Am I so out of this world?
or another way of thinking:
there is a new feature now: “PreInsert-SEND” and
you can e.g. place an EQ within the STACK-container, then SEND to IEM, and place another insert (e.g. Compressor) afterwards.
for e.g. I prefer to have a quick overview in the mixer view, so placing almost all plugins into the mixer INSERT slots.
Also keep in mind, if willing to use 8pcs of inserts on a live-audio-input channel… :
the complete processing need to go through 1 CPU core,
second: insert plugins can cause significant delay in signal (that’s the “pro” again for the new PreInsert-SEND feature)…
I personally always measure a new plugin for it’s delay (measured in samples) and phase before start using it in my live environment…
I normally use a Gate, EQ, fast Compressor, slow Compressor, Limiter (which makes 5) and an additional EQ for special feedback treatment (what could be on the Mixer side). But for my normal Input-Chain I already have to work around, thats where the original wish arised.
But for being the only one who seems to have this wish to be more flexible on the Stack side, I give in.
@fkalmus I read about the feature, but I just wasn’t sure, if it would help me and if it had any downsides to the way I do it right now. As my next gig is coming up, I don’t want to change too much right now, but I give it a closer look afterwards.
Once or twice I also felt that 4 inserts isn’t enough, but it was one or two songs and I added additional inserts to Mixer channel.
Another way - use plugin that have more than one function you listed. (Oh, while I write slowly, @CliveJ gave quick reply, yes for guitars there are many complicated plugins for (I guess) the same reason - lower the latency and have in a box everything you need).
Good one for vocals is Waves CLA Vocals (my favorite). It has Bass, Treble, Compress, Reverb, Delay and Pitch sliders. Fast enough to not notice the latency.
I also found FireAmp by FireSonic (the United Plugins) and it has Gate, Punch, Transient, Color and Clarity knobs. Also low latency.
So there are many plugins that have internal connections between inner “plugins” and thus may have a little less latency because the signal doesn’t go out of the hause as it is in case you added 4 plugins.
I guess this is one of the reasons why there are only 4 insert slots.
Thank you all for your feedback. I just had another philosophy in mind, that the plugin is selected by what sound I want and not what suits the DAW. I feel more “stable” if I don’t need to add another third party plugin to work as container. I also looked into CLA Vocals already and use some FireSonic Plugins as well. And I don’t like it to stumble over that one Song where you want to try something and recognize, that all 4 Inserts are occupied and you have to workaround.
But I can live with the additional 8 Mixer Inserts to all.
I have never used a limiter in a stack or on a single chain of the mixer. I use it only on mix-channels (group busses or main out). It’s an overall better strategy to adjust the gain of single channels to -12 to 0 db. With that you have enough headroom to avoid any clipping and you can leave out a limiter.
I have many global stacks with 4 inserts occupied and 3-4 more inserts on their mixer channel. Global stack s’è mixer channel are also global so they will stay for the whole project. If I then need song level only inserts I’ll use other workarounds (usually doubling the input as a part-stack)
This will always be the case. processing of any process cannot be assigned a core different from all of its sources, and the same goes for those sources too, so we need to process the input (guitar, vocals, that is, Stack (or track) input) before we can process its channel etc.
latency is not affected by the number of inserts. It is always the sum of all those plugin latencies.
Stacks are sub-mixers. My guitar and my voice each run through one of these, they also have dedicated Send Fx, so you have all in one compact entity which enters the mixer channel, where you can further process them to adjust to the Song (as Clive pointed out already). And Stacks can be dragged/dropped to and from the Media Bay, saved and loaded etc.
