Move last three measures to previous page

There appears to be plenty of space for the last three measures to move to the previous page and eliminate the need for a fourth page.

Reberclark had a similar problem in March 2022, that was solved with the suggestions given. This is what I see when I go to “view signposts”. I don’t even know if I know what a signpost is supposed to look like, but I see no change. I’ve managed to fit the music on three pages now, but I have the red triangle on page 1. It still needs to be evenly space. I’m fine sharing the file if someone wants to see it.

I need to figure this out so I can continue to convert Finale music that needs tweaking. Thanks, Connie

Have you tried this?

The red triangle indicates a Page Override (you have made manual changes to the frames).

Hello Connie,
“Move” is definitely a term from the Finale days.
Dorico works differently, as you know. It automatically fills and distributes your music into your layout, depending on your Layout settings. You can think of a container, that gets filled with a liquid.
The process of automation will not work, if you have manual overrides. You should remove those first. Then start changing your Layout options slightly: things like space size or note spacing or vertical distances or page margins - until Dorico fills / distributes your music into your layout. Feel free to post your project here.

“View Signposts” isn’t a solution in itself. Signposts are the coloured flags that Dorico uses to show you items that would otherwise be invisible. Some people hide these signposts, so they don’t obstruct their view, but it’s very useful to see if there are System or Frame Breaks, for example, when trying to sort out layout problems.

If you would like to show us screenshots of the relevant pages, in Engrave mode (with Signposts not hidden!), then that might allow us to provide the right help. Or, better still, the actual Dorico file.

This particular view (last one) is what happens when I remove the override on page 1. In the course of “playing” with this problem, I have gotten the last three measures with the rest of the music. I just don’t know how to make it “flow” like it is supposed to.

Thanks, Connie

You have been manually moving systems around.

I did just three things :

  • Removed the page1 override
  • Engrave>Staff Spacing>Reset Layout (To return things to square one).
  • Layout options>Vertical Spacing>Inter-system spacing reduced to 8.5 (to allow five systems on page 1)

Gratitude_R3-edit.dorico (1.6 MB)

(I also fixed the tuplet/bar length problem in bar [edit] 20. ~You had a tuplet on the last beat, but the base of the tuplet was a crotchet [3:2q], not a quaver [3:2e]. So the tuplet split itself over the barline)

Hope this helps.

[EDIT: Is there a reason you have a very large left margin?]

Thanks, Janus! Your fixes sent me on a query to know more about Layout Options (again). That was helpful.

I’m think the left margin was defined in the XML import. I have changed that.

I’m in the “learning” stage. I’ve been composing as a hobby for decades. This has been a big speed bump in sharing my music. Most of what I’m working on is “old” songs I’m turning into Dorico files just for practice. This is good for me.

I’m sharing my file. The first page “looks” fine. I’m not using the tools correctly and still get the red triangle. Ugh! Anything I fix, gives me the red triangle.

I couldn’t see any change on m23 from what I had.
I’m curious about the colored notes as well. How did you do that? Is this in a later version?

Red triangles in the Pages panel represent page overrides – places where you have made frame-level edits directly to a page. These are not universally bad, but they do prevent the page from responding to any changes in the underlying page template. If you need/want to do something that results in a page override, it’s best to leave it to the end of the layout process, when you’re sure you’re not going to be making further changes to the templates.

View > Note and Rest Colors > Voices. It’s certainly in v5 and v6, most likely earlier versions as well.
