Moving dynamics left/right

Hello All,

This is a repeat of a message I sent yesterday which has disappeared….oh well.

I am trying to shift some of my dynamics slightly to the left or right so that the “p” doesn’t end up in the next bar (see image below). Since switching from Finale last August, I have yet to be able to properly place the dynamics. The haripins have little circles on them which means you should be able to make them smaller or longer in write mode, but usually I can’t seem to be able to grab them. I typically write in a rhythmic spacing of 16, so in theory, I should be able to shift the dynamic markings (f, p etc) subtly, but I can’t do this either.

I am running Dorico 5 (yeah I know I should upgrade) on a Macbook Pro M2 Max. Operating system is Sonoma 14.5.

Any help would be greatly appeciated.

Cheers Sue

The easiest way to extend/shorten dynamics is to select them and press: Shift+Alt/Opt+arrow.

Beware, your mp will also move but just select and drag it back to beat 1.

You are the best Daniel!!!

Somehow I missed that part in the conversion from Finale to Dorico.

Part 2 to the same issue.

Can you do a similar trick to move the dynamic markers (p, f etc) in small increments. I tried do Shift opt arrow to move a “p” but it didn’t work. I also did the “beat relative position” to before and even though it moved it to the end of the previous bar, it is still tied to the next bar.

Cheers Sue

Alt/Opt+arrow = move items

Shift+Alt/Opt+arrow = increase/decrease length of items (not applicable to single objects such as immediate dynamics)

When using the previously listed commands (and most others), Dorico moves the items according to the rhythmic grid resolution (i.e. if it is set to 16ths, items will be moved by 16ths). So, to move by smaller increments, simply decrease the rhythmic grid resolution.

In Engrave mode, you can also move items but instead they will remain attached to their original rhythmic position.

Does this information help?

I’m not quite sure what you mean, sorry. Can you attach a screenshot?
