Moving lyrics in Engrave mode

In the attached example: using the horizontal mover in Engrave mode, if I want to move, for instance, seven to the left, it also moves five and six to the right, and the opposite if I try to move seven to the right. This happens moving with option-arrow, option-command-arrow, or shift-option-arrow. Is there a way to just move lyric syllables without other adjustments? Thanks.

Yes, your clip demonstrates the issue. Bill

Sorry, what’s the issue exactly?

When I moved the lyrics, nothing else moved.

This is because horizontal justification is working at all times in page view. Subtract space between two beats and the rest of them will stretch to fill it. The only way to not have justification is if it’s the last system of the flow and it’s shorter than the threshold in Layout Options > Note Spacing > Only justify final system in flow when more than n% full.

Could you say more about what you’re trying to achieve with spacing?

Mark,

That answers my question. I’ve learned to just keep fussing with it back and forth until it gets to where I want it. Thanks.

Bill, I am reading this thread with interest, but don’t see the solution you seem to have found. What is the procedure? Do you dive into the Property panel to align the syllables differently?
Ah yes, btw. if you credit the person who wrote the contribution (that helped you) with the “Solution” tag, other people looking for a solution will be pointed directly there.

In Engrave mode you can move just the lyric and not the note by using Alt+arrow [left or right].

Yes dwlarson, but it would be best to have a method without going into Engrave Mode.

But… that’s what engrave mode is for – to make adjustments to the positioning of objects.

… only if one can’t get the basic settings, options or manual properties right.
That’s Dorico, it tries to work for you.
Engrave Mode is only the very last resort - if everything else fails.
That’s why we all here aim to find real solutions and not workarounds.

I suspect I am the only one in this thread so far who has understood the point of the OP. The word “lyrics” in the thread title seems to be a red herring. The lyrics are there only to label the beats for reference. The question is not actually to do with moving words, but spacing beats. (Perhaps Bill’s point in asking relates to making space for lyrics, but he didn’t say so.)

Sorry all, I have to admit I’m still lost. I don’t know what the OP is wanting to achieve.

Edit: @Mark_Johnson may be right

Sorry to cause confusion. Yes, I am trying to adjust the note with lyric attached. The way I have done it is just to fuss with it – move the note, move notes on either side, until I get things sorta where I want them.

The Dorico way is different, you don’t nudge around. It is better to adjust the Note Spacing of your Layout, either in Layout Options or with a local Note Spacing override. If you set these values, Dorico will do the work for you.

In Note Spacing mode, if you click on the square handle over the note with lyric seven and then click on the circular handle underneath, you can move that note to the left without changing the position of any other note:

Then you can switch to Graphic Editing mode, select the lyric seven, and move it to the left by the same amount:

@billstevns , I might be a bit confused too! Is it your intention to move the note or adjust the alignment of the associated lyric for that note?
I would think that the best way to adjust notes is to use the layout properties for that. Also you may want to check the alignment properties for lyrics to left/center/right align on the notes. Save any fine tuning for engrave mode.

John Price’s two-step approach does what I need.

What you’re trying to achieve is actually still unclear to me.

If what you want is to change an individual centered syllable to left-aligned with the note, there’s a property for that!
