Moving notes independently

I need to adjust the location of notes in a bar. Is there a way I can move notes independently of one another for graphic purposes?

  • I know that I can use Engrave Mode > Note Spacing, however that moves all notes vertically (from what I can tell), and I need to move an individual note.
  • I understand that this is messy, but it’s an engraving job and I don’t have a choice but to follow the original look of the piece.

I think if you select the A# and B, then right-click>voices>swap voice order

Instead of using note spacing, try selecting notes in engrave modes and use “Voice column index” in the properties panel. I find it solves the majority of problems quite well, although there could still be some graphical modifications that you would prefer using the note spacing tool after the fact, especially when dots are in the way. Just play around with various combinations of voice column placements, it’s easy to undo by flipping the switch off, so there’s never any harm done.

Oh! And Janus’s comment about swapping voices is also a good place to start

Thanks for the insights. In this particular situation swapping voice order doesn’t work because I have to keep the A# the most left note (again just having to follow the design of the original).

@claude_g_lapalme idea about the voice column index is a solution I think. I’m setting the A# as the VCI 1, the D as VCI 2, and the B as VCI 3. It’s still spaced a little more than the original, but I think I can get away with it for the client.
Thanks!

Glad it is helpful, but really, once it’s done, you should really never be afraid to nudge a couple of things - either rhythmically (squares) or graphically (circles once squares are selected) with the note-spacing tool. That’s what it’s there for!

Trouble is it moves everything vertically, which I get the purpose of that, but it would be nice to have an option to override location using the X & Y controls for odd engraving situations like this.

The graphical part of the tool will not do that. After you select a square, you will see a small circle underneath. Select that and move it with alt-arrow keys.

Yes, I’m familiar with this method, thank you. I was looking for something different.

Got it! You never know what people know or don’t know on such a big forum!

I’ve watched the linked video here and read this thread. But I’m wondering: is it possible to graphically nudge only 1 voice on a staff? I’m having some challenges with this, where I want to nudge the C just a hair to the left, so that it looks clearer. But if I use engrave mode, “note spacing”, then select the circle, then use alt+arrows, both voices move to the left or right. I did use “voice column index” initially to align the voice 2 and voice 1 parts here. Then I tried to uncheck voice column index to see if I could better edit it without it turned on, and even though I could move the toggle, the score doesn’t return to pre-voice column index selected in look.

I’m pretty sure that Dorico should be handling that better by default. Here’s what I get.

That’s perhaps too far apart, but there are Engraving Options for this. It’s notably that your next bar looks different.

A quick test in Note Spacing mode shows that I can adjust the individual Down-stem note by moving the circle, not the squares, without affecting the ‘beat’ positions.

I don’t know what happened with mine. I don’t have as many squares to begin with. Maybe something got combined in some way in my document?

Don’t know what I did originally wrong, but I thought it would be best to just delete it, then start again. So with that, I was able to get what I was looking for:

This is such an important concept it needs to be stressed somewhere in the manual.

Just spent far far too long trying to move things by the ‘square’ attachment points. As soon as I discovered ‘circles’ I got the wierd spacing I needed (to show that the player must start a new phrase at “a tempo”. )
