Hi!
I have figured out how to move the end of an hairpin (either dragging or shift/alt arrows). But how do you move the middle so you can create another shape? Sometimes it’s possible to move, sometimes not.
I’m talking about Write-mode. I could probably “fix it” in Engrave mode, but I would love to skip that step.
Am I missing something here?
It sounds like you’re asking about entering a crescendo/decrescendo as <> and then making the space in between the two hairpins wider. Is that right?
Not making it wider - just moving the position so the maximum loudness happens over a specific point in the music.
If you’ve entered this as a messa di voce, either with the dynamics panel or the popover (as <>
, no space in between), then Dorico will give you one symbol with three handles: one at each end, and one in the middle. You can grab the one in the middle in Write mode and drag it to another rhythmic position.

If you’ve entered it as two separate hairpins, then each hairpin has a handle on each end, and you can adjust each one as needed.
Exactly. The weird thing is that I can’t move the middle handle… It doesn’t move.
I’m on Elements, but I guess it should work the same.
Or to put it more correctly - sometimes I can move it, sometimes not.
If you have long note values, it may look like it’s not moving until you get to the next note. In the image I posted, you’ll see that it doesn’t move until I get to the next quarter note.
If you want more granular control, you can open the bottom Properties panel, and adjust the “Messa di voce inflection” property. Each whole number in this property represents one quarter note from the left endpoint of the marking.
I’m doing the exact same thing in two different bars. Must be a bug.
I found a workaround this time: just copy/paste from another part of the score.
Thanks!
If you come across this again, it would be helpful if you could upload a cut down version of your project file that demonstrates the issue, so someone can take a look to see if there’s something else going on.
