I have a large work, 21 pieces, about 10 minutes long, 200+ measures in a variety of meters, using a combination of NotePerformer, Halion, and Kontact for playback of all the instruments. Lots of things are going well, but a few issues. In just a couple of the parts, there are multiple measures of rest that are not consolidating into a multibar rest.
I've tried all the common solutions: deleted the rests, looked for signposts , checked for hidden meters, no instructions or marks in the measures, selected and deleting barlines before time signatures, changed System break. In Layout for the part, Consolidate Multibar rests and bar repeats is selected. During the place in question, other parts also have rests and have no issues showing the multibar rest. The part in question has a multibar bar rest correctly showing earlier in the piece. All parts have been added in manually, there was no import from a midi file.
These sorts of problem really do need us to see the file (else everyone is simply guessing).
If you could upload a copy that deletes all, except the players that are giving problems, someone should be able to help
I’ve deleted all the other instruments . Please look at the Guitar part, not the score, I’ve maintained the same layout that I actually have in my full score. Issues are with bars 77-81, and bars 173-176. Trying to get those bars to condense into multi bar rests.
It’s to do with bars 51 and 122 (sorry I edited these as I got them mixed up)
You have Chord Symbol Regions in these bars that span all the way over the broken bars. Make sure you have chord symbol regions only over the bars where you want chords.
Select each of those bars using the System Track and Filter > Chord Symbol Regions > Delete.
This sort of problem is usually caused by something hidden in the problematic bars. I was not able to find anything hidden. I have found a way of getting those recalcitrant bars to consolidate, but it requires some “surgery”, so I would advise to make a copy of the file and try the following procedure on the copy until you are confident enough to try it on the original. Even then, always have at least one extra copy of the original to go back to if necessary.
Select the double barline at the end of bar 76, press shift-B, enter -5, then press Enter. This will remove those 5 bars so that what was bar 81 will now be numbered as 77.
Select the same double barline, press shift-B, enter 5, then press Enter. Curiously, when I did this it created 2 bars which were not consolidated followed by 3 which were.
Do the same two steps again starting with the single barline at the end of bar 76 (that is - remove 5 bars, add 5 bars). It should now show a 5-bar multi-rest.
The Frame Break will now be in the wrong place so you will need to either move it (in Write mode) or create a new one (in Engrave mode) and delete the existing one, and probably change the barline at the end of bar 76 back to a double barline.
Also, unless you want to change all the notation to be in the same voice, the Ends Voice property will need to be re-activated for the last rest in bar 81 (or the last rest in bar 76).
One problem that arose is that the 5-bar multi-rest now occupies the entire width of one system. To change this, select the Frame Break while in Engrave mode, open the Properties panel (lower zone) and check Wait for next system break.
The same procedure will work for bars 173-176, although when I tried it the second lot of removing and re-creating the 4 bars was not needed.
Be aware that there will very likely be other changes caused by doing all of the above. In cases like this I usually create a PDF of the file before changes are made and one after, then compare the two.
EDIT (after some thought):
A much simpler and safer version of this is to select the double barline at the end of bar 76, use shift-B to add 10 bars, then click on the rest in bar 77 and do shift-B, -10, Enter.
OMG!!! That was it, it was hidden chord symbol regions that I messily included in rest measures. This instantly cleaned up my guitar and piano parts of unconsolidated multibar rests. THANKYOU.
So many hard things to deal with this program- that i can’t just automatically put up some chord symbols in a part, that it is very difficult to put chord symbols in one part and another chord symbol in another part (for polychord voicings). Can’t begin to describe my frustration with layout on parts and getting them to look evenly spread out. I guess I have a lot to learn, less than a year on a new format. I’ve watched countless tutorials, both from Dorico and many others from helpful people on Youtube trying to facilitate Fianle users to migrate over. In some ways, this is such a superior program. But it is not easily learned and there are so many hidden things to sort out.
Anyhow, sorry to gripe. Pro composer and professor of harmony, used Finale at pro level for about 15 years. Not regretting the move to Dorico, but things like this are definitely slowing my creative flow. Many many thanks for the quick response
