Multi-episode project resource meter spikes - can I find the cause?

Hey all, more of a general question here. I’m still using Nuendo 12.0.70 on Windows 10 and have a project with multiple video shorts in it (like 10-15 second, animated ). Somewhere along the line (likely a plug-in instantiation), I added something that occasionally causes spikes in the resource meter on playback, throwing up the CPU overload detected dialogue box. When the spike isn’t happening, the meter is still sitting at a regular usage level (it isn’t maxed out or anything). I’m sure it’s a plug-in somewhere.

I have noticed things like this happen as plug-ins get updated and (ultimately) use more resources, such as the latest dxRevive Pro’s Studio 3 algorithm (vs. Studio 2) and the Scheps Omni Channel 2 (vs. 1), but I’m not sure what could be causing this one as I’m not using those.

Is there a way to export a VST plug-in log of some kind to try to find the culprit? Is there a log that shows spikes and what’s causing them?

I don’t want to create a new project for subsequent episodes as I share a lot of content between them, and it’s easier to have them in one place, but it sure would be nice to find what’s causing this.

Thoughts?

I’m seeing similar behavior in a half hour series I’m mixing, have not been able to nail down the cause. Perhaps we begin listing out plugins we’re using in the templates to see if there’s a match?

It’s almost like it’s on a timer…autosave will kick off, then the meter spikes for a second, drops, then rebuilds. Same happens with manual saves.

If auto-save is a trigger there might be an issue with your storage solution or perhaps RAM?
With regards to plugins being the source… one way to test is to disable them all. Start playback and enable them one by one. If it triggers the spike on enabling then you’ve got your bad actor. It’s not something that is done jn a minute but it could work. Good luck
