Multimeasure rest + empty bars

Hi Forum;
Been a while, as I’ve been using Dorico almost daily and made substantial progress transitioning from the F software.
I don’t think this is possible in D, but…can I have a multi-measure rest combined with empty bars in Write mode?
Like this:

I need to be able to input music in the empty bars as students are listening to music in a live class (thus Write mode).
I experimented with all the options in LayoutOptions/Players/Bar Rests & Multi Bar Rests but can’t find a solution yet.
I tried hiding notes in Write mode, but they show up until you replace them with the real music notation. Not a good visual for students.
I tried inputting notes in the part (thus replacing mm rests as the music was input); again, not a good visual in a live class.
Any ideas?
Let me know, and thanks in advance.
Bill

If I understood correctly, try View>Note and Rest Colors> uncheck Hidden Noteheads.
You will be able to enter notes whithout seeing the hidden noteheads.

Thanks Charlse;
That works partly. However, I can’t seem to have mm rests appear for different flows, not for others, in the same project.
From the manual “You can hide/show multi-bar rests in each layout independently in Dorico Pro, and you can hide/show bar number ranges below them.”
Here’s my project. I can’t get the mm rests+blank (hidden notes) bars as in your file.

Any suggestion?

I just realized I had hidden notes in the first 4 bars ot “Swift.” I removed them, but MM rest still not appearing in those 4 bars.
Here’s the file again with the hidden notes removed.

They are still here!

To display the multibar rests: Layout Options>Players>Bar and Multibar rests>Consolidate>Multibar rests.

That said, I’m not entirely sure where you want Multibar Rests and where you want regular empty bars… In your document, Flows 1 and 3 contain truly empty bars (which can show as multibar rests if you enable the function, or as empty bars without rests, like you had it set), while Flow 2 has hidden notes — so multibar rests can’t appear there because there are actually notes. In my screenshot above, I had four truly empty bars (so multibar rest), and the rest was filled with hidden notes.

With Multibar rests disabled:

With MB rests enabled:

Here is your file with the second flow looking like your first screenshot.
I enabled MB rests in score and parts, but you maybe don’t want them in the score.

Hi Charles;
That works for if I use a part for each song. Here’s what I really want to do: separate flows in a single project, with the mm rests showing in separate flows in Write mode.

Maybe you can figure it out, but I’ve not been able to so far.
Thanks for all the effort, and let me know what you think.
Thanks, Bill

Thank you! So, I would say the best option is to have a single player and a single part layout (in addition to the full score). In the Layout Options, for the part layout, you should choose the following (uncheck Show bar rests… and check Multi-bar rests)

Then, as a workaround to break the multibar rests, you can insert Chord Symbol Regions on the bars you want to keep empty but without multibar rests (Select the bars, Shift+Q, type reg) . In the View menu, uncheck Highlight Chord Symbol Regions. Here’s how it looks, quickly, in a new project.

Then, in the part, you’ll be able to enter your notes. You don’t need hidden notes, you don’t need three players or three layouts.

It also works with hidden notes instead of chord regions: the spacing might actually be better when everything is empty.

Hi Charles;
I think yo hit the proverbial nail on the head. This seems to be the only way: no multiple flows.
Thanks 1,000,000.

Well, multiple flows, yes. But only one player :slight_smile:
