Is there a way to indicate that a single note should be played with multiple fingers simultaneously (e.g. fingers 1, 2, and 3 on the same piano key) using Dorico’s Fingering and Positions feature?
I do not mean alternative fingerings or finger substitution. Rather, the performer is instructed to depress a single key with several fingers at the same time.
Is this possible using the existing fingering functionality, or would it need to be entered as custom text or some other notation item?
I’ve been waiting for someone to ask this question for several years.
Piano fingering conventions still have some loose ends, which I have attempted to rectify as follows: When two or more fingers in the same hand play the same key together as a technical device (often for stability) I simply write the fingers in succession over or under the note: 54 or 543, would be examples. This Dorico does without issues.
To distinguish this from trill fingering, I use a hyphen for trills, for example 2-3. This also allows accurate specification trill fingering situations like showing where a trill begins or ends on a different finger than it starts with, 2-3 1 would who’s a trill that alternates 2 and 3 until the last note is played by 1. 2-35 would indicate a trill that alternates 2 playing one key and the third and fifth fingers playing the other key simultaneously.
