Multiple machines in a studio?

I ran across this the other day. Might solve a problem or two dealing with multiple machines in a studio and one dongle between 'em all…as well as other uses.

For the Mac:

For PCs:

But if implying that several computers can say, share a single Steinberg USB copy protection device…that would obviously be above your basic networking.

That’s exactly what it is capable of doing.

Have you tried it? Do you know it will work with the Steinberg USB dongle? I’d imagine Steinberg would be less than impressed. Looks very interesting :sunglasses:

…Shared USB device can be used by as many clients as you need, however only one client can connect to a shared device at a time…

it’s like plugging the dongle into another computers USB port…

I’m interested, too, mainly to share my SL25MkII/Automap among my PCs… would like to know if I’ll be able to share a HUB with 7 USB Devices with only one license… guess not…

You need to D/L the thing. Opens into a trial version. There, you will see that every USB device attached to your box will be listed.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh !

Aloha W and tanx for the tip.

I see that you can connect to multiple machines
but I am not sure that by using this technology if
you can run more than one machine (using Cubase) at the same time.

I’ve d/ld the trial and will check on this.
Sure hope I don’t blow out my dongle. :frowning:

It would soo kool to not have to plug and unplug all the time.

{‘-’}

It’s two devices for less money a license… Where’s the difference?

The question in my mind is: would this work with VE Pro as well, which also requires an Ethernet connection?

Interesting. Has anybody tried this yet?

Yes, you can try yourself, too

Multiple platforms available for the Eltima.

I wonder if the syncrosoft driver would have to be installed in the client machine??? Still wrapping my head around this

I’m not seeing this as a way to do anything illegal or sneaky just convenient

Yes! It’s like with any other physical USB port.

Right

lol…that’s what all the pirateers say

Could you possibly be overlooking the obvious?

This is legitimate software. It is designed to permit multiple machines access USB peripherals connected to them. And across multiple platforms. It is aimed at the office market. I am in a small office situation….that’s how I came across this software.

The fact that dongles utilize USB ports is just something the copy protection industry will have to deal with. They chose the implementation. Software such as this was bound to pop up sooner of later.

Consider this: I have three machines all loaded up with Cubase. Two are part of an audio suite and the third is in a video/design suite. I have two licensed Cubase dongles. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to head down the hall to fetch a dongle to run one of the other machines.

If all I need to do is run this program to access my dongle (or any number of other USB peripherals) without getting out of my chair, I’m a happy camper. Considering I’m not running Cubase on both machines at the same time, I don’t view this as piracy, just a convenient remotely accessed virtual USB cable to access the dongle. I’m not stealing anything. To me, there is no difference between using this software and running a 175 foot USB cable from from one edit suite to the other. Not to mention less wear and tear on the dongles themselves, which I’m sure you are aware are not the most robustly manufactured devices made.

If Yamaha or iLok view this as a threat….it’s their problem to deal with. That’s progress.

…just sayin’

Steve, accusing me of pirating is a bad joke

And again, please read and understand: you can not use ONE shared device with two or multiple clients at the same time. You have to unplug it and plug it into the other client (physical), or disconnect it and connect to it from another client (with USB-over-Ethernet)

Afterall it’s only more computer proccessing power & resources needed to run more VSTi’s & FX’s. To force people to pay more for this is just not right…imo.

Excellent point. Couldn’t agree more.
