Music staff spacing question

Moving from Finale to Dorico: at the suggestions of my friends here on this forum, I have been going through the Dorico First Steps. For some reason the staff spacing still results in a third page, even though I have followed the First Steps very carefully. I’ve attached a screenshot of what it is supposed to look like (from the First Steps page) and then what it still looks like on my application. Is there a simple way to reduce that space between the staves on the second page, or to set a specific number of staves to a given page?

Your staff size seems a little high. Do you know how to reduce it?

Just to make sure: paper size maybe?

Indeed, it looks like an A4 versus a US-size, possibly Letter.
In the second page the casting off is not the same.
Perhaps Note Spacing is not right.

If you share your version of the project, I can compare it against the “final” project I’ve got here, and compare settings to see if there’s something fairly simple going on.

First of all, thank you to this online forum for the quick replies. As I move from Finale to Doric, I’ll probably have plenty of questions. My process will always be to see if I can figure it myself, and then post the topic. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time. So, to the topic at hand: in the online “First Steps” video there is a step-by-step process that I followed three times, always with the same result. The paper size is A4, as stipulated in one of the steps. I think I followed the steps exactly as written, although of course it’s possible that I missed something. I’ve attached the Dorico file and also the pdf document from the website. I’m using Dorico 5.1.51.2153 (Aug 6 2024) on Mac OS Sonoma 14.6.1 .

In a sort of butterfly-effect turn of events, it was because of bar 42: you had added the arpeggiated left-hand chord on the last quaver beat, when it should be on the 3rd crotchet beat (ie a quaver earlier).

Moving that chord back a quaver allows an extra bar to fit on that system, and the rest of the piece flows from there.

You’ve also got a double slur in bar 43.

PS there have been a couple of Dorico updates since 5.1.50, most recently 5.1.70 earlier today.

Thanks! Small error sometimes make for big problems. But would there have also been a way to reduce the space between the staves, or to force a number of evenly-spaced staves onto a page, as there is in Finale?

You would not have been able to fit 7 systems on the 2nd page with the settings you have. So ”Make into frame” in engrave mode would not solve the problem.

The workflow could have been (if not solving it like Lillie) to work with layout options. Experiment with:
Note spacing
Page setup (Space size, Page margins, Music frame margins)
Vertical spacing (Here is where you reduce space between staves)

Yes, that was covered in an earlier task in First Steps – you’d already successfully completed that step.

(That’s what that section of First Steps is intended to do: introduce you to the key tools at your disposal for manipulating how music falls onto pages, knowledge that you can then take away and apply to your own projects.)

Yes, can set a fixed casting off in Dorico, but that can result in more music than “should” fit, so you would need to check the results.

For an overview of how to work with spacing in Dorico, I’d recommend watching this video:
