My first stab at using Cubase 15 with Yamaha Vocaloid

Hi everyone,

You might have read in one of my earlier posts how pleased I was with Omnivocal being released with Cubase 15 as I enjoy writing lyrics but cannot sing and I was therefore having trouble visualising how my songs might sound with vocals. Well, after using Omnivocal for a while I decided to bite the bullet and purchased Yamaha’s Vocaloid software. I’ve put my first ever song together and am quietly pleased with the overall result. Vocaloid and Cubase 15 work really well together via an ARA bridge. Users can hone the singer’s voice right down to note by note and even phonetic by phonetic if so desired. There is way too much for me to detail here but if anyone is interested it is well worth checking out the Vocaloid website and some Youtube videos to get more of an idea of the software’s capabilities.

Here is a link to a song on my website that I wrote only using Cubase 15 and Vocaloid 6. I’m sure it is somewhat a naive production - I’m only a hobbyist songwriter - but it might help people understand what might be possible using the two programs together.

I hope it doesn’t make you cringe too much!

One important thing I forgot to mention is that Vocaloid, unlike Omnivocal, is not instant. Once you have entered your lyrics, or updated them, it does take a few seconds to process the song. I see this as a good thing. I am running CubasePro 15, Vocaloid 6 and WavelabPro 12 on an eleven year old computer running Windows 10 with a total of 8mb of memory, Intel Core I5 chips and I’ve never yet had any instability problems or crashes. OK the programs do take a few minutes to load but I can live with that. My songs tend to be on the simple side (Smooth Jazz and Quiet Storm genres) with not too many instruments involved so maybe that helps. I keep thinking I ought to invest in a new PC but Why? when everything is working (its an HP All-In-One and the screen is getting a little misty though). And I’m nervous about actually doing the changeover with Software licences etc. Anyway, in short Vocaloid works well with Cubase 15 on basic PCs in case this helps anyone.
