Just trying out unmix drums on some pro recorded drums my brother gave me…just to see if there is improvement from SL10. Hmmmm, SL couldn’t tell the difference between BD and SD…wishy washy metals…I’m sure I need to work harder
Hey, I LOVE SL, don’t get me wrong. I’m new here, but not new to audio production…I wasn’t overly impressed with music unmix in SL10…I use SL mainly for talking post and NR…with which SL is fantastic
What do you mean by ‘wishy washy metals’? Please post a test sample of the source material you were processing with Unmix Drums so that others here can test.
yeah, I don’t know if I can…I’ll have to ask if those soundfiles can be shared in public…
as far as BD/ SD…yes, SL11 sensing BD as SD
wishy washy? too much cross-over I guess
I just tried to Unmix Drums a drum loop from Kurzweil K2500 which was recorded to tape in 1995, recently “digitized”.
That I could share…but how? Google Drive? …hmmmm…We Transfer, maybe…I’ll look into it
None of the unmixed layers came out anywhere near it. This loop is SLATHERED in rvb, for sure.
Again, I’m finding the best workflow is to remove vocals/speech which SL does very well.
OK, so I can post a zip here
HeavinessGirl_Drum Loop_Left_full phrase.zip (1.1 MB)
BTW, this is mono
Well, in all honesty, this audio has not very much in common with the sound of drums, right?
The sounds are electronic pulses of noise played in a rhythmic pattern. It’s not easy to understand that one of the sounds should correspond to a kick drum, until you , after Unmix Drums is performed; you solo the snare layer and hear the pattern of the two different pulses (“snare” and “kick drum”). If you then unmute the kick layer you can see rudiments of a kick in the lowest frequencies an then manually select-and-shift-x move from the snare layer to the kick layer, should you want.
And the cymbals/hi-hat doesn’t sound much of a cymbal, more like synthesizer generated noise that ‘wants to be’ cymbals.
We shall not ask the impossible from SpectraLayers shall we?

totally, I agree with you; yes, not real drums in that example
So, I’ll find some real, dry drums and try that

Ha! I have some old band recordings that are:
_5 vocals (yes, 5)
_guitars (1 or 2 or 3)
_piano (pretty much 100% Korg EP)
_bass
_drums
_sax
_pedal steel
_mandolin
_accordion
_banjo
_Crowd
which should be pretty good test material for SL11
OK, so I have just tried SL11 Unmix Song on a stereo recording of a live performance in 1992 with a crowd of probably around 80-100. This was a battle of the bands final, so the venue was packed…and I think the capacity was around 120-140…but I don’t remember exactly and that venue has been closed down for a couple decades now. I was singing lead that night and the dance floor was completely packed.
Anyway, the soundman recorded the FOH board direct to DAT recorded at 48/16.
In the song I tested, the instruments are:
_Bass (Fender P-Bass)
_Drums (4pc)
_Vocals (5 singers)
_Elec Guitar (2 guitarists)
_Pedal Steel
_Piano (Ensoniq KS-32 with one of the Grand sounds)
_Sax (tenor)
After a very quick review, the Unmix Song results are really very impressive for the bass and drums…Sax, too, isolated quite well.
“Piano”…I guess “fake” sound sources are not easily recognized by SL11? That Kurzweil “drum” loop and the Ensoniq “grand” sound are not well identified/ unmixed…This particular Ensoniq grand sound has far too much rvb and stands out in the stereo mix as working against the rest of the “music”.
I haven’t investigated the vocals, gtr, or other layers yet…other than the “piano” is mostly in the gtr layer. I wonder if this related to today’s elec guitar modelling representation?
Further, there is reasonable crowd noise on this recording and I’ll look into that as well as make some attempts at unmixing the multiple vocalists.
Obviously I’ll report back. I probably could share the song here if anyone wants to hear the results…I don’t think my old band mates would mind
yeah, so, Piano unmix layer is mostly drum metals remnants…easily cut to new layer to mix back with drums…but very little “piano” sounds unmixed
sax bends went to “other” layer
@ctreitzell
Can you send me this performance. I may be able to unmix all the guitars plus the pianos and the crowd noise. Dm me
