Mysterious issues when exporting to compressed .xml (file not getting created)

Hello Dorico team / Dorico users!

Obligatory: I’m so glad to have bought Dorico a few years ago, using it is a pleasure beyond compare and even now, upgrading from 3.5 to 5 improved my worklow in more ways than I could’ve imagined. Thank you again for this brilliant piece of software, I’ll be using it till my dying days!

Now for today’s subject: since upgrading to 5.1, I’ve encountered a few times some weird behaviour regarding .xml (compressed xml) export. When exporting, sometimes (the dreaded “sometimes”), some layouts don’t export anything at all. Meaning, no files get created, no error show up. I suspect some faulty Players, as when the error occur, it occurs in all layouts containing that Player. (I’m extrapolating from the few times I’ve got the error).

XML_export_problem_project_test.dorico (1.3 MB)

In this included file, the first Player (Voice) is corrupted: I can export the “02_Guitar” layout, but neither the “01_Voice” nor the “Full score” work. I’ve tried to pinpoint the source of the problem, such as deleting notes, but it proves to be really hard to track down (deleting all “unlocks” the export, but it doesn’t seem linked to a specific bar or anything…). As an example, in my full project file, containing 12 flows, only 5 full score (out of 12) .xml got exported.

Brand new computer, fresh install of Dorico 5, I hope you can replicate this issue from my file. As implied, exporting to .musicXML works well, but I’m currently in-between exchanges with my fellow Sibelius user who’s requesting .xml files (I’ve sent him .musicXML files but at this point I’d just like to find out what’s creating this strange bug). As a last resort, I’ll simply blame my fellow orchestrator for not using Dorico

Thank you in advance for the help,
Nicolas

Welcome to the forum, @NDG. Thanks for the detailed report of the problem you’re experiencing. I suspect the issue you’re experiencing is indeed, as @Derrek suggests by providing a link to another thread, the problem whereby Dorico is incorrectly exporting some lyrics in your project. When exporting compressed MusicXML, we perform a schema validation step before we create the archive, and if that fails, then the export will be cancelled at that point. We don’t validate uncompressed MusicXML in the same way, so that will always be exported as expected.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience caused by this bug. It will be fixed in the next Dorico 5 update, which is coming soon.

Thank you very much Derrek and Daniel,

I apologise for not finding the thread (I’ve looked if anyone had the same issue, to no avail, anyways)

I’m happy to hear this is a known issue on its way to be fixed.

Thank you again for all your work and have a great day!
Nicolas
