EDIT: I’m a couple of days in to using the modifier key and I do feel it’s an improvement overall. I would have preferred if the app started with a modifier assigned instead making us create one. The default state upon installation doesn’t seem good to me. But, anyway, it’s good now. I didn’t expect this to be such a big topic :). Thanks to all for your input
Hi, I just booted up my first project in N14. I’ve been using Nuendo since v2. I understand why you guys changed the clip gain controls. Having the handle in the middle of the object sometimes left it hidden in overlapping objects which was annoying. But emulating pro tools - who came years after Steinberg in adding this feature was a mistake. I also understand that you’re trying to make it easier for post mixers to switch. Just functionally, it’s much more difficult to click on the fader when zoomed out. Also the gain movement is much less precise. I know I can use shift for fine adjustment but it’s still much less precise. I spend a lot of time using clip gain. This change hurts my workflow, not helps. It was much more intuitive to have the handles on the actual gain line. I’m sure you won’t be putting it back to the old way, but please…find a way to make the gain fader easier to grab, hold, etc. This is also clunkier when doing a relative adjustment to multiple clips.
FWIW I do like seeing the gain numbers on the objects clearly.
Thank you.
I know this is not a solution, but have you tried setting up a keycommand to do clipgain? It is pretty fast and you can do necessary tweaks with the pencil tool making it much more precise. And the auto segment detection also helps a lot with clip gaining segments, in my short experience with it.
That fader can still be a bit bigger i agree though
Also you can set a modifier key in preferences now to be able to change clip gain with your mouse by clicking anywhere on thr audio event, which is better than the old center node thing, and the bottom corner fader (imo). Think the video mattias posted above shows it. it’s called “edit velocity” in select tool modifiers in preferences
Pro Tools style clip gain is fantastic. I’d have been more than happy if Steinberg had copied that but unfortunately they didn’t and seemed to have left the door closed on other features which logically work (e.g. clip gain to volume automation and vice versa).
Thanks everyone. I just got started on it today so I will check out the mouse control pref. It’s never fun learning a new workflow, particularly when it’s this central. I normally zip through clip gain adjustments. I doubt any solution will be as good but I’ll work on it.
Demerits to Steinberg for breaking something that didn’t need fixing.
I guess I just have to see the mouse over modifier key. The event curves aren’t new though. We’ve had that. I guess they added some tools to it but…very slow and detailed. The old clip gain nodes were so fast and easy. I don’t feel like this is a step up.
Hey, just wanted to say I totally agreed with you on the original point. However, after setting up the modifier key so I can click anywhere on the event it seems to have improved workflow in the end. Furthermore, when you do it this way, the actual gain changes behave the same way as the old adjustment granularity. I feel I have finer control over the gain as opposed to adjusting with the fader and modifier key; hard to explain but it’s something you feel is just “right”.
I’m curious to hear what you think now after trying this out for yourself…
I think its the one thing that has irked me most on the update. Working on drums this morning I’ve hit the clip gain on the left 30 times now while trying to adjust the left bounds on the parts
Clip gain has been one of the most powerful of my tool palette since N1. I was concerned putting the fader on the lower left but it’s no longer clip gain it’s a trim. I spent the time getting used to using the event volume automation and after a couple of hours the need for clip gain is less of an issue for me. Less clicks on the mouse. I can always make 2 points left and right of the edit and use it like clip gain. I assume the orig clip gain line gets in the way of the new event volume curves.
According to most ppl in this thread, the implementation is crap. So I’d rather be able to grab the lower corner of my clip reliably to resize it and find the middle to pull down the gain, than have a crappy clip gain that causes me trouble. If they improve the experience I’m all for it…
