Need some vertical line help

I’m having some problems getting my head around how to use vertical lines.

This is not at all critical to me, but if it’s possible, I’d like a vertical line that crosses staves between points. See the attached graphic. Notice that in the flute part (top) and the harp part (3rd and 4th lines) there are grace notes. In the case of the harp part, they are hung upon nothing, basically grace notes to a rest. And I would like to put a vertical (dashed?) line (with an arrow on each end) between the grace notes to emphasize that they are played simultaneously, basically a hint for the conductor. Yes, it’s a picky detail I though was cool in my youth. However, it’s not as difficult as it might seem to play. It’s just a quartet, with only two players playing right there, and there’s a conductor (originally me). With a good cue and eye contact, they can (did in fact) hit it perfectly.

I don’t know if vertical lines can cross staves. If not, c’est la vie. There’s one other place that something similar happens. If it can’t be done, it’s not a great loss. I put them in on my pencil performance score.

My other problem with vertical lines will follow sometime later. I think I just don’t know how to anchor these things.

You can create vertical lines across staves that belong to the same instrument, but not between different instruments.

Edit: But @jesele has the better answer.

Coordination Lines in Engrave mode?

@jesele, nice try! It almost works. The problem when I tried to do it is it insists on aligning on the note (or rest) following the grace note, not on the grace note. It wouldn’t let me move it in Engrave Mode after creating it. This is no surprise, and I guess I’m really asking too much here. Who (besides a kid with his brain full of clutter) would even think to put a grace note before a rest? :slight_smile:

I can see how this feature could be useful in a cutaway score, as the manual explains.

Let’s call this thread closed. I’m not going to fuss with it any more.

Thanks much for trying.

Hi @Lynn_Newton, I tried and it is is possible to position the coordination line where desired (dragging it and its control points, or using the moving shortcuts, or changing the offsets values in the properties panel, after electing it)

@Christian_R

The problem seems to have been that I could not drop a coordination line between grace notes. In the lower part, the two I showed were both hung on nothing, i.e. before rests.

I was able to create coordination lines but couldn’t move them to the grace note. I’ll do without them.

Just trying to clean up some unresolved issues here.

I don’t now what you are doing, but it is possible to create the coordination line and move it, even in your situation. In Engrave mode, select both grace notes that are at the same rhythmic position, and create a coordination line. Dorico will put it where he thinks is appropriate. Then drag the line (also in Engrave mode), and also drag the control points where desired:
